>>4049987>what do you mean with "too much"The point where the depressing elements outweigh the protect boy feelings and the whole thing collapses into "I hate this." I can't think of a great example that's right over the edge, but I'll use pic related. He's a super cute boy and I love the light hearted pics of him. But even if you ignore the guro shit that's way over the line (the reason he isn't a great example), the other depressing, abusive, bullying, fucked over by life pics of him still go too far for me. My feelings of sympathy and care for the boy are overridden by my distaste for the pics.
I think a lot of it has to do with balance and my intuitions about the artist's intentions. Made in Abyss has a lot of things in it that should make me hate it. There are times when it goes full torture porn. But the way it's balanced against hope, intimacy, reciprocal trust, honor, etc. allows me to not only tolerate it, but enjoy it. It makes me feel like Tsukushi isn't just engaging in purely mean spirited torture of his creations, but rather trying to explore the full breadth and depth of human emotion through them. I can't say the same for the artist of the pic related boy. The mean pics are just wholly mean with zero light or goodness. And it makes me feel as though the artist doesn't like or care about him.
