The MC designs (boy and girl) have largely been flat and boring since the shift to customization in X/Y now 13 years ago. There were some duds in the previous era, but the MCs use to have as much character put into their designs as the major MCs. Since X/Y, the MCs' default designs have just felt a lot more like WIP temporary placements since the assumption is that the player will ultimately swap out the design for something else. I would say that only the Arceus duo partially side-steps this, but that's just because the defaults are teen versions of Lucas and Dawn. I won't lie and say that I dislike ALL of them (I like Victor well-enough, though more for the sake of pairing him with Hop), but I just don't think GameFreak puts the same level of care into designing the defaults like they used to for the older MC designs.
