Probably because there has been an incredible shift in culture around the world. I mean, between then and now twitter is more of a porn site now than social media: we have pixiv, we have booru sites. There has been an increase in furries and furry porn. We have places like discord. There was the whole tumblr thing which actually was the best place for porn and artists until it changed policies, then they all moved to twitter.

I think people thought Navi were kinda hot but the spaces, tools, artists and cultural acceptance just wasn’t there for the first movie. People were still heavily ashamed of anything deviant but now nobody gives a fuck. I DO remember there WAS some interest in Navi back then. Just for the reasons above there’s a different culture now.
