Maine Coon? They're big and fluffy, but also friendly, intelligent, and physically active.
He can definitely be one catty SOB at times. There's a surprising amount of sarcasm and coming this close to snapping simmering underneath although he always manages to keep it under control in the end.
He's extremely loyal to his friends and crew, to the point that it can be used to hurt him, which is more of a doglike than catlike trait.

Laziness is definitely part of it. Personality shouldn't have to correlate with position in bed in the first place, and shoehorning people into one of two extreme archetypes tends to chop off half their character and history, but fans think it's easier to work with. Apparently keeping porn preferences separate from characterization tropes is too complicated for some people, and so is settling for switching instead of picking a "side" to shove him into.
And we're going to do that his personality is switch-flexible anyway, like MCU Captain America is. Firm and strong-willed, but also sweet and sensitive, both mellow and irritable, yet troubled and emotionally and physically vulnerable. Luckily bottoming fans tend not to file off quite as much from him as top fans, even if they like healing sex tropes a little too much. There's less quantity, but at least the quality is somewhat more consistent.
The other major cause seems to be fans self-inserting too hard for the sake of wish fulfillment. This is ultimately more down to tastes and interests, but things like nuance and character complexity tend to get in the way of cheap quick indulgence and once again people have a hard time keeping porn preferences apart from characterization. It's a distraction from the fantasizing.

Araki gets shit for drawing samefaced characters, especially nowadays but I have to politely disagree and say that during SC era he was pretty good at giving everyone unique facial features. You can especially tell with my husbando, in my opinion his wide mouth is one of biggest charm points. Sadly many people forget about such details but that's the only nitpick I have when it comes to fanart aside from wrong personality portrayal. His eye colour changed with every new official material to the point where it's never the same twice, so I can't really complain when artists just pick their favourite version. After all he has many colour swaps that are canon thanks to the nature of series and as long as his hairstyle is recognizable, I don't mind small stylistic changes to his bangs since there are at least 3-4 ways to draw them and all can be found in official artwork. Same for earrings, even though personally I prefer the "1 cherry per ear" design instead of early one that was also used in OVA adaptation.

That's a silly thing to complain about. Stardust Crusaders is the most diverse part when it comes to bodies and faces in character design. Probably why it's one of the more memorable ones. Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency also do a pretty good job with making Joseph, Caesar, and the Pillar Men have diverse facial features, but people are too distracted by the wonky anatomy to notice it as.
Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe is nice, but I do wish parts besides 4 and 5 would have more slice of life spinoffs or expansions of the characters.
I really wish they'd make spinoff sidestories for Voltron even with the fandom being what it is, but it's unlikely. DW seems to have a lock and key over that stuff and all the official stuff is mostly retreads of what's on the show, when we know for a fact that they had to cut out quite a few fun and emotional scenes that would've definitely fleshed out the characters more, so they could fit in more scenes of CG lions stiffly floating through the air or characters running down halls talking generically about reversing the polarity of the neutron flow.
A lot of character backstory especially for Shiro whose childhood and family situation we still know absolutely nothing about got lost in the shuffle, and all it's stuff I would really have liked to know, given that the handful of peeks we did get still managed to communicate quite a lot of character depth nonetheless. Although there is sometimes that desire to leave certain things unsaid so that fans can fill in the gaps on their own, in case the writers are so incompetent that them saying anything would create an extremely unsatisfying answer. That has been an issue this show suffers from.
