Not really, they loved it when they were well made.
The original zendikar "treasures", then the original expeditions, then inventions, then the godawful invocations, then the super promos from ultimate master and, to a certain extent, the japanese planeswalkers.
Specialty items are only good when you can also get a normal version of the card to actually play the damn game.
The japanese planeswalkers, the ultimate promos, they were fine. They were something more for the collectors that really want the unique art or the extended frame.
People soon found out that, while the super treasures are indeed cool, WotC can't help but add dud cards amongst them for some weird reason.
Getting a lavareach as your boxtopper was a kick in the balls to anybody that got is, same with whoever got shit like the "boil invocation".
There were many cards that could have got a better reprint, but they use said limited runs as an excuse to NOT properly reprint them.
Also, it brings in even more of the investor scum that hikes up the prices for said card, even the non-special cards, because they'll be in high demand.
