>>9955525>>9955528Microbio guy again
I worked in a hybrid bioinformatics and biochem lab for about 3 years several years ago. The pure computer science bioinformatics people are at a serious disadvantage. They know almost nothing about biology or chemistry.
I was giving a presentation of my research at a mostly bioinformatics meeting once and I swear to god like 10 bioinformatics people refused to believe a SDS-PAGE could tell the molecular weight of a protein. My presentation got totally sidetracked and I spent 20 minutes drawing on a chalk board how SDS-PAGE works and how it visualizes molecular weight. They acted like it was black magic and stupid.
It can be shocking how ignorant the grad students doing bioinformatics and computational biology can be about fundamental molecular biology methods. Many of them are computer science nerds who have taken like 2 biology classes and have literally zero molecular biology lab experience.
That is why here
>>9955535i say having a skill set of programming can be an asset. If you can understand both the code side and the biochem side of computational biology you will have a real leg up on these computer nerds who have almost no experience in biology.
