Only in mathematical models do we know that other states are possible. The formal/popular explanation for this is there is a collapse, that's why we don't see it. Alternatively is the more counter-intuitive answer, the wave never collapses, what we see are parts of the whole universe but because of decoherence, we don't see the whole of the parallel universe.
