Academic presentation is not about acting the part. You say the facts, rely on your studies and said facts and you won't have trouble. If you love what you do then you won't have any problem talking about it.
Remember, most of the listeners are in or been in the same boat as you are though from other reasons, and they are there to hear about what you are doing.
You are already in the club so don't sweat about trying to impress people.

Have you been to a fish market where the fishermen bring their fresh catch? Some are selling crabs from buckets and it is a bitch to get one out, they always hold on to each other and you end up lifting the entire bucket of crabs.
It takes a lot of effort to pull one out.
That is you, your old environment are grabbing on holding you back, even if it is in your head. It takes a lot of effort to move ahead, but once you get rid of your bucket of crabs then it is smooth sailing. Just work it and concentrate on yourself.

i know at least a few hardcore academics from presumably totally privileged backgrounds (judging by last names like “Goldstein”... no antisemitism, just being real) who become literal stuttering messes too. lots of people have trouble speaking publicly. confidence is something you need to build, and practice helps. to some degree everyone will understand if your nerves get to you, but it definitely is bad for e.g. job/admissions interviews. anyhow i don’t think it is too correlated with your family background

Nah I grew up going to church where you watch alot of public speaking every Sunday and all the kids are encouraged to do a little bible reading once in a while. That was all always easy for me because I'd dealt with stage fright etc as a very young child where there was no voices but encouragement and I couldn't really fail. Since failure was cute.
Also sermons teach you how to make an essay or lecture on genuinely anything like how something the vast majority of the audience would have watched on TV on friday night was an interesting parrallel to certain Psalms or something.
It's ironically fantastic academic training.

Discard the negative aspects of one, then easily declare it superior to the other. I like it

Anyway I think this line of analysis only considers the hypothetical case of airdropping a fully-grown person into one environment or the other. In reality, people start as babies knowing nothing and get shaped by the people around them. Part of why my family moved out of the ghetto at the earliest opportunity, my parents preferred me to have no friends than bad ones

Well.. the moment I entered the big leagues uni in grad school, many of my classmates turned out to have prof or at least teacher parents of some sort.
There is such a thing as an academic environment for growing up. An environment where learning is valued, curiosity fostered, an environment where you actually get to know some professors personally etc.
It really changes your perspective. Of course, it does not make or break you as a scientist, but it can make you more comfortable when you need to apply for grad school, contact professors etc.
Not that your parents will necessarily be involved, but you will have that experience of actually knowing what academia is about and how it works (whereas many undergrads, even advanced, have no idea) and be less intimidated by it

Growing up in an area where crime is prevalent and considered "something that normally happens" (not necessarily a good thing, but just something that happens) by your age group is obviously going to have an effect on the people living there and their outlook on life, no matter whether or not they actually are victims of crime.

Also, because I'm not exactly sure what this thread has to do with science and math, I wanted to make a point. According to google, a scientist is a person who "is studying or has expert knowledge of one or more of the natural or physical sciences". I believe that the word "scientist" has been misused and narrowed to only represent a type of profession, when it is so much more. I'd say that all it takes to be a "scientist" is the need to feed your sponge brain, and the application of the scientific method. I think that anyone, no matter their background, can do this provided that they have the will and determination to.
Stop worrying about the past, because it doesn't exist, and don't worry about the future either, because it also doesn't exist. All there is and ever will be is the present, and to let things that don't exist hold you back, is a waste of the present.
Anyways, I feel 30% gayer for having made this blog-post, so I'm not going to post until I'm fully de-fagged. Godspeed, /sci/entists.
