Not all life is made of cells: sure proteins which are essential to cellular life, often have beautifully precise shapes, that start as long strands that fold into helixes, hairpins, etc. Shapes that play a huge role in what they do; however when heat goes up, the bonds that keep those protein structures together break: first the weaker ones, then the stronger ones such that one ends up with denatured proteins.

Or haven't you seen the living ocean or the win that cries in the horizon, or the magma alligators that slowly crawl the Earth?
Everything has life but our anthropocentrism makes people believe than only human-like things have life. But in reality there is always an indeterminacy of translation, such that you can never know what is actually occuring behind the minds of others. So consciousness could simply be an interpretation of the functions that operate in the world (as if filling in the emtpy spaces of structure)
