chess is an esport. classical games are boring as fuck to watch unless you compete yourself, but bullet, blitz and sometimes even rapids are very fun and engaging, of course depending also on who the players are, the casters, etc.
in the past 3 years it has grown a lot online, there's tons of people livestreaming their games and tournaments on twitch, youtube, lichess etc, and tons of resources to learn by these same people who are players, teachers and entertainers. it has been very interesting to see develop. it's also interesting how different can the styles be, compare for example Chessexplained with Chessbrah. they produce basically the same kind of content, but i bet their audiences don't overlap much.
oh what's even more interesting is how having engines that are much better than any human doesn't even matter, if anything it helps (apart from killing classical chess, which they are doing and will continue doing). but for chess in general it's being quite positive overall
