More and more people are avoiding expensive universities and self-learning. Universities are pure signaling. Check out Bryan Caplan's "Case Against Education".
My story:
I went to Harvey Mudd... which, if you've never heard of it... is an extremely prestigious college. I only went there two years, and then left... but I then took all the courses I would have taken in my major for free, online via MIT OpenCourseWare, Stanford courses, and the Harvey Mudd site (which I still had student ID access to, it's not currently available to non students)... and I just put that on my resume. I now have a job with a human factors consultancy that requires a masters degree... which I have the equivalent of.
Just do it. Take the courses online for free, and put that on your resume. People are doing it, I'm telling you. Employers will respect your balls.
