Why is this guy famous in the first place? Like he's a cartoonist according to Google, so what cartoons has he worked on? Why does it seem like he's only well-known among the amateur artist crowd?

He's mainly known for his demo:you know how some comic artists can draw their characters from memory in a few seconds?
Kim jung gi does that but with a lot of characters,plus drawing full scenes is scary for a lot of amateurs let alone doing them in fisheye without any grid or underdrawings.
He also draws for comics but this doesen't seems to be the most important factor in his popularity.

People don’t talk about visual artists anywhere anyways. When’s the last time you saw a painter on Jimmy Fallon. People don’t consume art that way, it’s not a pop culture thing unless it’s Banksy or someone who mingles with celebrities in a mainstream way. Damien Hirst doesn’t do late night appearances he’s busy being a billionaire. David Hockney can’t fit a painting demo into a 3 minute TV segment, so they don’t book him. People do not care

In terms of raw skill in freehand drawing and sketching he is like fucking Usain Bolt. Usain Bolt has not much of substance to provide but jesus christ is he impressive. There are very little people in this world who can do what KJG does, and anyone who can has put an insanely copious amount of time in to do it.

You are really showing your lack of knowledge concerning the art world with this post. You can be:
1) A commercial artist, making a living from mass consumption
2) A contemporary artist, making a living from yuppies
3) A dead artist, not making a living from rich people buying your works for millions.
The confusion which the OP alludes to is, in spite of allegedly being a "cartoonist" which would place him squarely in the commercial artist category, he is virtually unknown among people who don't draw. At the same time, whilst having a modus operandi of a contemporary artist, he is unknown among yuppies. Still somehow he is "famous". So what gives, the OP is asking?

This thread made me realize how lowkey retarded are Kim Jung Gi fans. I only know this guy because /ic/ but despite we having at least one thread peer week about him and him being probably on the top 5 of artists most mentioned here I barely seem any of his artwork being posted, people just talk about the guy.

I like his work, I think is amazing, but the way OP says it makes me realize his only popular for his branding and gimmick and his fans kinda fall for that sort of capitalist bullshit. Bit of a waste people are more interested in his process than his work.

Well, i think his technical skill is among the highest i've ever seen, guy is just the incarnation of the normie definition of "Being good at drawing".
Youtube has a drawing community built on that definition, so he just fits in at the top.
To be fair, studying his drawings is pretty good though. You can get a lot by doing it, or at least i did.
