how do i make art like kunio okawara?

i'm not sure what materials he uses when hes drawing or doing colour illustrations like pic related

is he using air brush or acrylic paint in stuff like pic related to get the metallic look or for when light reflects off them metal?

Either get rid of the line or do one more pass on that with a cleaner lineart, the little tid bits going haywire is distracting even when zoomed out at 50%

I did this last month after I found the blog of an anon who does some nice machinery and got inspired. I think the hardest part of making good robots and machines is coming up with designs for the surface so it looks like something real and functional.

Bolts, plates, crevices and moving parts that connect. For what I could gather each artist has this visual library of a handful of things that work and trows it around changing some stuff. I plan to get down and do some actual legit mecha, robots and machinery study at some point, so I hope this general is a thing when I'm finally read to do so.

These older guys who draw mechs and vehicles obviously didnt have scott Robertson's training so how did those guys learn to draw that kind of stuff? Just a basis in perspective drawing and observing manmade objects? I dont see a lot of pros using that sectional drawing technique except for scott robertson and amateur people who are trying to be scott robertson

I did study Robertson but in that drawing i didn't apply much of his stuff, it's just a model I found on pinterest copied using the mighty power of the boxes

Robertson’s techniques are just a distillation of what used to be taught routinely to product and industrial designers in art school. Most likely they learned all the same techniques Robertson employs if they had any level of formal education in the 50’s through to the 80’s.

obviously. If you know perspective, all you need is a lot of patience. Just don't expect to produce any good stuff at first without refference/studying other mechs or real machinery.

If you’re drawing a vehicle from imagination you don't need to be accurate just make it look convincing enough. A lot of that scott robertson stuff seems designed for designers and concept artist trying to convincingly portray an alternate reality. Opposite of toriyama whos art is all about having fun (not drawing but for the viewer)
