Going back to the drawing board on this animation now that I have several voice clips for the character.

If you don't care that your lines are going to look a little scruffy because you're not using a stabilizer, go for it. As it's animation, each frame doesn't have to look amazing anyway, so you could easily get away with using a mouse as long as the effort was made up through smooth and well proportioned frame transitions.

I'm experimenting with adding line tweens in motorpen. You select 2 lines (start & end) and motorpen creates the middle frames.

Looks good... Looks like someone big is breathing on them though lol.
Not that I'm all that knowledgeable, but try and think about, like, balls of air pushing into the clothes and then rolling off. Also edges often move like a snake slithering (but more subtle) good luck with your next things I look forward to seeing them!

I recommend the feynman technique. Substitute animating instead of teaching of course. The things to study are both the real life thing you are animating, and other animators ways of portraying that thing.

Woahhh...? Secondary action vs overlapping motion? I've only ever heard of secondary motion as being things that have motion dependent on something else that is first animated. I like the distinction of concepts, but where is this terminology coming from?

I do not have a set rate currently, but I can provide what I did offer.

Animated on 4s, at 24 FPS (roughly six drawings per second)

$70-80 per second - block in, roughs
$120-180 per second - block in, roughs, tie downs, clean up
$150-200 per second - block in, roughs, tie downs, clean up, flats
$200-250 per second - block in, roughs, tie downs, clean up, flats, shading

Lastly, $300-400 per second for everything mentioned (SFX, VA compositing, etc.). Multiply that by thirty, and you'll reach the range we agreed upon.

What's a simple animation program that's good for binary drawings? I like using Sai because of how basic/non-cluttered it is and has a stabilizer for my tablet. If there was something like Sai but with animation support, that would be literally perfect. I suppose a pixel art program with animation could work too but idk any good ones.

I personally recommend Clip Studio Paint EX if you want a smooth transition from Sai for a premium. TVPaint, Krita (also good for pixel art), and OpenToonz are also good options if you're looking for freeware.

For pixel art animation, Asperite for premium and GIMP, GraphicsGale, Krita for free.

Hard to say, given I've been busy fulfilling the commissions I have on my backlog. Part of the reason why I've had to hold off on most of thise projects.

In terms of raw output, I can rough a fullbody frame in roughly about 2-5 minutes without a block in. Cleaning up and adjustments vary.

Tie downs and Inks tend to take twice to three times longer, depending on complexity.

Flats, roughly about the same time as the rough stage.

Shading, it depends on complexity.

I think you have the idea of the boob bounce down but pay attention to the mass of objects, her head, boobs and arms are flunctuating in size. Her hair could use more frames at the end of the swing. Also the last boob bounce ate a piece of her arm.

the woord you're looking for is Key frames
I'd recommend adding a sinle frame of wind-up so tht the action becomes more readable rather than the spontaneous movement
also the cape should have a lot more delay imo it seems like a piece of cardboard rather than loose fabric
otherwise it looks great
love the little follow through you added for the hair

hey, thanks for the feedback on my key frames. the cardboard looks obvious in hindsight after a bit of revision

it looks great anon you definiely improved upon it
now the next hurdle would be the in-betweening
make sure to not just give it evenly spaced inbetweens or it'll look too robotic
look into slow-ins and slow-outs and apply that to the movement when you do the in-betweens
you're moving in the right direction

How do old animation cels get stark colors without brushstrokes? What are anons opinions on hand-drawn cels vs computer animation? Does film vs digital make a significant impact?

For something of a feature length film is that a workload capable of someone given a reasonable timeframe or is it consistently something that needs to be a team effort? What size team would a production like a feature film require? I'm thinking along the lines of a 2D animated film rather than the Disney gorillion dollar productions. How much do artists usually charge for that type of workload?

I'm genuinely curious who has money to throw around like this on commissions unless they're a company paying you for something they're going to use to make money themselves. I no doubt appreciate the work that goes into 30 seconds of frame by frame animation, but it's still amazing that someone would be willing to pay so much for it just for the pleasure of having it.

it's just opaque paint applied once color at a time.
hand drawn is hand drawn, quality is the product of the animator regardless of whether the input device is a pencil or a stylus.
there was a marked decline in color harmony during the switchover from photographed cels to digital ink and paint at least in japan, sticks out like a sore thumb in the big o for example, but as time has gone on digital paint has gotten better, since around dennou coil. there's no logical reason to use the cel process anymore.
there's a few examples of solo 60-90min features, but they're usually by autists working over a period of many years. more common were entire 11-22min tv episodes drawn by individuals, with paint and production handled by dedicated studio departments, in japan and at hanna barbera, jay ward, bill melendez, filmation etc. during the '60s-'80s.
iirc bill plympton's features were drawn entirely by him, with additional crew of 10-20 for the rest of production, with budgets around $100-500 thousand through the '90s-'10s.

I'd say there's a little bit of inconsistency with your floppiness of the ears reactivity - push and pull. they flop forward, but not backward for the same or even greater force? I'm betting just one frame of making the ears smaller, then bigger again on the last position would add a lot to the feeling of floppiness

I love the smooth effect and want to make something like telegram stickers, but I'm torn between two workflows. should i push through frame-by-frame animation or learn the stupid rigging methods? it seems like for someone who actually knows how to draw and has a solid sense of form, these shortcuts offered by live2d and after effects could actually be a burden. For reference I got a satisfying result of a looping sticker which took me maybe 3.5 hours to 4 hours, from sketch to final line and color. Do you think actually learning after effects could cut down on my time?

That depends on how much you will use each model. 3d animation is frontloaded, where you can spend hours rigging and preparing before even animating a single frame. But with each frame you animate, you make the prep work more worth it. If you spend 4 hours on a traditional animation or 4 hours on rigging + animating, then it doesn't matter and you should just do what is most comfy. But if you want to make three times the animations, then suddenly you would have to spend 12 hours in trad and only like 6-7 in 3d.
3d is definitly worth the effort if you plan to upscale.

What do you guys use to animate? I can't stand how the brush feels to use in Adobe Animate. In fact I'll just animate stuff directly in Photoshop if I know it will be under 10 frames. I might stick with it if the timeline tool wasn't so terrible.

Been using Procreate on my iPad but it's too limiting because it arbitrarily limits how many frames I can have even though it's a paid software.

How do you tolerate how choppy/frameskippy the CSP playback thing is, is there a fix?

I know you can do the "play all frames" option but it goes at a slower framerate from what i can tell

That guy made up his own retarded version but usually you number keyframes with a circle around them, breakdowns are underlined (breakdowns are basically showing that something will not a be a straight inbetween) and then inbetweens are just numbers with nothing else on them.
Sometimes charts are on the pages for the spacing. People mistakenly call them timing charts but they have nothing to do with timing.

rigging like that is often a waste of time. the guy in this video could have just inbetweened those three key drawings using either shape tweening or just cutting up and manipulating the drawings with the transform tools without all that brittle setup and third party scripts for a single 1 second shot.
imo 2D puppetry only makes sense if you're going to use and reuse a fairly static asset in long, static camera shots with lots of similar little movements, like porn or vtubers.

that's spot on, slower movement generally needs more frames.
unless you're locked to a particular frame rate or count for some reason, the best thing to do is start with the key (story) frames and then just keep adding rough breakdowns and inbetweens one at a time and play it back until it feels good, then when you're satisfied move on to cleanup.

Seconding this. I think I got the process down except everything after the clean up/douga part. Do you guys just do douga on CSP? What's the process for that? I think I might just get opentoonz and do the colouring and douga on there since it seems to be built for it. Then put it into hitfilm for post processing. But I use CSP for everything else.

in studios it's the same as with video, just using the drawings as the source image sequences: drawings (digital or scanned in from paper) as image sequences -> cleanup, ink and paint (photoshop, opentoonz, whatever) if necessary -> compositing (after effects) -> sequencing (premiere or fcp) -> export to video.
solo, the whole thing can usually be done in one package alone: flash, tvpaint, blender and opentoonz have some manner of compositing, sequencing and video export.

Sorry what? Thats not right at all. The slower the movement the more you can get away woth slower frame rates like 3s or even 4s. When the movement is fast use 2s and when it's really fast, 1s. Thats generally how it is with anime, a variable framerate. But most western animation is all on 2s regardless of context

It has the best playback of any software ive tried, csp stutters on long projects but tvp eats through frames like theyre nothing. Its worth sticking it out and learning the slightly strange french layout of the software, youll like it eventually. I hated it when i first picked it up

2s are comfy. You can go to 1s if needed or throw in some 3s to draw attention to stuff.
Anime goes a bit too far with their use of 3s and even 4s. The dialogue scenes in anime where it turns into holds or cut to panning background image make me depressed. Dialogue shouldn't be boring, you should be showing me how the characters react and think.
Obviously budget related though.
