It might not adhere to this weird code of honor that is prevalent here, but honor has little significance when it comes to making money or even when creating art. The greatest problem with Greg Land is that he traces from very popular and copyrighted images AND sucks at it. Generally when a comic book artist or mangaka traces, he does so from reference that he created himself, like in the video I linked where staff dressed up and posed for the reference. And then he adds his own twist to the material. Greg Land doesn't do that, he is just a plain thief and gets away with it.
A smart artist does trace, it just needs to be utilized well. And I invoke the Japs because it is actually widespread industry practice that occurs in both West *and* East, and not because there is one famous mangaka who does it. No, they all do it.
