>>5218953there's one answer and one answer only. Study sight-size bargues or preferably casts to build basic 2d proportion ability > draw from life a shitload > learn construction methods ala will weston
people here try to learn construction first and then fuck around trying to autistically 'shortcut' their way by building up scenes with perspective then figuring out where the light is etc. etc. like they're working in blender but on paper. It's a ton of work and they never get good results.
People who can paint from imagination well are able to do it because they built up a vocabulary by drawing/painting from life, full stop. People here skip that because it's hard. It's hard because prior to drawing from life, you gotta build your faculty for correctly percieving and reproducing positional proportion and value proportion. And the best way to work on that is the old academic methods.
picrel actually paints from photographs, but his paintings look better than photos because he literally has thousands of hours of strictly doing life drawing/painting. 100% he can btfo any of the digital artists /ic/ worships if he were to work from imagination. He even says he literally just makes up half the color and value in the painting from imagination because the photos don't contain it, it's just cheaper than hiring models and he can imagine any info that is missing or he doesn't like.
I've been on /ic/ for 12 years. Back then I tried to do the autistic construction way and everyone said 'gtfo draw from life'. I spent a decade learning and they were right the whole time.
