I once walked in a forest near my home and I picked up a branch that had fallen on the ground. On teh spur of the moment I put it between to other branches still on trees to show other people that someone had been there and put it there. There was no way it would have been in that place by happenstance. And going home it dawned on me that that's what art is, something we leave behind so that others knew we were there.

Fine art is art which was devised from the beginning of its creation to have no practical function, in this way "fine art" doesn't mean "great art" but rather "pure art". The best definition I can boil down is this.

Art is a medium of communication.
This could be visual arts, music, literature, dance, or anything else that can tell stories.
People like stories.
They're a fundamental part of our cognition.
A very powerful tool.
