It would be a patterned texture (not necessarily a custom brush, just a consistent simplified pattern) I reckon, pulling the actual volume out of it would be too difficult and probably not really worth it

try dark base then doing little dots with another brush (probably with pressure opacity control) over it, letting the dark stuff showing thru. then go in and render and add details+shading

You can skip rendering a lot of the texture by only showing it at the shadow terminator. A good value structure is more pleasant than physically accurate textures in a not-focal-point part of the image.

don't worry too much about imitating the exact pattern. get the edges right, and it will look good. Read Richard Schmid's book!

The fur texture is nice but I have an issue with this, a the lack of texture variety, the skin is rough, the eyes are rough, everything is rough and it suffers for it.
Also the strokes appear to be random and don't flow with the contour of the shapes.

That's because it's a filter. Originally I just wanted to see how the fur texture would come out, but the result was pretty convincing so I decided to check if it would pass the /ic/ litmus test

I suspected it was a filter because of the haphazard lines without purpose, lack of variety in textures and and muddiness but I didn't want to accuse prematurely.
It basically lacks purpose, emotion and an artistic touch.

Any number of procedural painters out there. Topaz Simplify, Gertrudis, Postworkshop, Snap Art, Dynamic Auto Painter, Synthetik Studio Artist. Most of the time I've seen them used is when 3D artists want to make their renders look more painterly
