Will reading and practicing Loomis help me get to Murata's level or do I just make like all the other Jap artists and copy my art idol for awhile until I git gud?

Yeah agreed, I think the shading + backgrounds are done by the assistants and he mostly focuses on the characters.

They do fundamentals too.

Practicing and reading Loomis can help but don't forget to look at other methods and styles as well. You might come across one that clicks with you better than Loomis does.

Krenz or vilppu lineart is better than Loomis but I use them all for ref (plus my obvious gigantic folder of manga etc fanart). Keep in mind of course that anime is anime head on realistic body
