Is it bad for a beginner to immediately go into digital art?

I see videos of artists using tablets and often they'll adjust parts slightly by shrinking, moving it around, ect. Which makes me wonder if it can potentially become a bad habit and wouldn't translate as well if they ever want to try out traditional. While the opposite wouldn't apply.

if you ever want to do character design for a studio the first thing they'll do to determine wether they should hire or not is check your portfolio, then if they like what they see, they'll put a sheet of paper in front of you and ask you to draw, in order to see how you fair without all the digital shortcuts.

Why? if you're doing character design professionally 100% of your work is gonna be on a tablet. It's about efficiency. That's like asking a job candidate to code in C++ for a Java interview.

Why would you lie on the internet. If they want an employee to be able to work in traditional media they would ask up front and expect to see that type of work in your portfolio. Nobody cares how you make something as long it's made to standard in a timely manner. Your example is so retarded. It's like applying to restore paintings, and in the interview they put you in front of a computer and ask you to draw big titty anime with a mouse.

Having someone program in C++ proves they have a sound knowledge of fundamentals such as dynamic memory allocation and garbage collection that aren't strictly necessary for Java programming, but prove them to be a more well-rounded and versatile programmer. The same goes for drawing; someone who can draw well without relying on crutches like ctrl+z and transform is probably better at visualisation and proportion than someone who can't.

Yes, theres a certain amount of dextirity requires to draw well. All the use of layers lowering opacity, causes a huge disconnect with pen pressure etc.

Also, when your work on paper, you have to think more before you start a line. On digital, you tend to always undo and it becomes a bad habit. There are no mistakes to learn from if you destroy them.
We could talk a lot about this but the short answer is : do both.

Not true, every digital technique has an analog is traditional media. If an EMP goes off that destroys all electronics, I would use tracing paper and collage techniques to correct my paintings and iterate non-destructively.

There is a reason why many instructors say to use pen or ink.
When you have confidence in your lines
something magical happens with your hand and you can make perfect circles, straight lines aka
complete control of your hand
If you start in digital, you will be trying to learn 3 things at the same time (draw, line control, how to use the table)
Once you can control your hand, drawing on a tablet will be like drawing on paper.
You need to learn how to control your FUCKING hand first, before learning how to draw
dexterity :)

I think his point is for the beginner, making mistakes is an important part of the learning process, because you have the tangible evidence left behind for you to analyze and improve on in your next work. The goal of a beginner isn't to make perfect completed pieces right away, but to find mistakes and shortcomings and improve on them. Using the undo tool constantly prevents them from being able to do this self-analysis.

When making completed pieces, there is a need to use those tools, but a beginner should not be focused on polishing their turds, but rather keep drawing more, and analyze their mistakes.

It's gonna be hard to liquify your painting on a canvas. Or to apply some Glow dodge effect on your layers. Good luck to make seamless texture for your drawings. And hue/saturation/light adjustment is going to be a ton of fun I guess.
What you are telling me is that there are workarounds to some digital features. Which is true but for most of them if you can do it in real life, then it's simply based on a traditional technique. And then my point still stands.

An eraser isn't the same as CTRL+Z. With an eraser, you often still see some part of your erased drawing. If you have to correct a big part of your artwork, you will take more time to think what your going to do. Paper and eraser aren't the best friends in the world and at some point, your can ruin your paper. Again your resources are limited.

Not if you use oil.

Salt on watercolor, application of medium, sfumato, etc.
Of course it isn't 1:1 identical, but as I said, there are analogs.

Look, no one is claiming it isn't easier to fix mistakes with digital, but acting like it is something unique to digital work is dishonest. There is nothing wrong with going straight into digital when learning to draw and paint, you just have an irrational aversion to the idea.
