how do you know which lines not to draw?

how did the artist know that he should only draw one shoulder blade? how do you know which part of the elbow to make with a black outline, which to hatch ad which are best left to subtle shading. how do you know exactly how much of the collar bone to draw and how much to imply? there are no black outlines or crosshatching in real life.

Because some parts are so subtle that to give them a line only clutters the image. The one shoulder blade has a line because its overlapping the middle of the back a bit and it helps sell that she's bearing weight on that side thus raising the shoulder and popping the shoulder blade out. Small shapes and light value changes can be done with light hatching. If it doesn't need a line to sell the shape don't use one. This pictures coloring sucks though.

Because they got the implied shape done with shading and didn't need a line. The lips were drawn to give the colorist a place to color in.

Lines are a visual shorthand for points of high contrast. Abrupt changes in lighting or color are how we break up the images we see into individual identifiable objects. Try taking any picture you have saved, desaturating it until there are no colors, then bumping up the contrast until it’s just flat black and white. You can do the same thing in your head with enough practice, but the easy rule of thumb is the more youthful the character, the less you draw inside the silhouette. Remember black on white shoes only the points of highest contrast, where heavy shadows are cast, so going overboard on areas like the nose and cheeks will give the impression of deep lines and wrinkles

Most people on here even the good drawers and painters aren't teachers. It's difficult to articulate things that we learned over years of experience. It's like trying to explain the color red to a color blind person. They just wont get it unless they get those glasses and see it themselves.

Line = intent, meaning you think that something is important enough that it needs to be drawn. Strength of your line, how thick it is, its energy that is also part of a good lineart.
It's always about your intent behind your drawing, what you want to show versus what you want to leave to imagination, there's no universal answer to that.

In case of the shoulder blade, you learn what to draw and what not by trying it 100x and discovering it always looks shit, eventually you leave it out.
I asked the same kind of questions and never got an answer ... eventually you develop an intuition for this stuff.

You have to do the least amount of lines to have the most amount of impact, line economy. How do you sell the pose with the least amount of clutter, this is why learning gesture is the fundamental too all art and why its recommend so much especially to beginners, it also largely comes down to preference through experience and i know this sound like a cop out answer but its true, most of art is illusion, illusion of depth , illusion of form etc, you have to use lines where needed to get these illusions across, your brain is very good at filling in the blanks
