For certain shapes of things I'm comfortable with it's easier and looks better to just go straight in and start drawing without thinking too much.
For things I'm less comfortable with and haven't really drawn before, like particular foreshortened views of the body, it's helpful to break things down into simple boxes to think more clearly about how it will look.
Boxes are just one more tool in your toolbox. It's wrong to base your entire drawing methodology around boxes or say that they solve every artistic problem, and it's wrong to say that boxes are useless or make your work soulless. They're just one more tool, take it or leave it, use them when they're helpful and don't use them when they're not. It's actually really simple, but zealots on both sides of the argument make it harder than it needs to be.
