The more you advance your understanding of image making, hopefully the more holistically you can combine thinking of different concepts.
As a student, you'll likely learn something with each study you do. I will say though that I've noticed a tendency in some people for preparation work to morph into another form of procrastination or avoidance of committing to finished work. At certain point it's almost better to go ahead and attempt the final piece and then do a post-mortem on things that could have been better. As a working professional you plan ahead to the extent of your uncertainty because there's not infinite time to piss around.
