Always balance the amount of work that ends up looking good, and work that ends up looking bad. You must draw shitty looking things, like bad sketches and terrible anatomy, but always balance that by doing copies, photo studies and ornamentals. Even a complete beginner can do some decent looking copy of another man's drawing, so do it to feed your ego a little. Study some anatomy, do some constructed drawings, then study a similar photo or a 3D model. Never focus on only one side, always try to diversify your drawing subjects.
