As I see it, there's no need to save references that are common/easily replicated. (Poses, objects, lighting, etc) For those I prefer to just use real life.
What I find worth saving are pieces that go to the visual extreme in at least one aspect. Whether it's 'anime' or not is purely incidental. It just may be that stylized art simply has more innate potential to take a concept to the extreme.
Is anime simply bad because it's Japanese? If not, is it bad because westerners like it? Is it because it's a stylization? Then how come western art isn't nearly as stigmitized? Why is western art the default, while anime is supposedly a bastardized version of it? To me, it's not anime. It's just stylization. When all the art surrounding me is 'anime', why should I actively try to avoid it? Why don't I get called a westaboo when I study loomis?
But anyways that's just my schizophrenia speaking
