>>4308584hey thank you so much for this comprehensive and thoughtful response.
i understand what you're saying. i think the problem is i don't do finished pieces. i always just sketch. I almost never tell a story with a drawing.
and maybe this ties into your other question. I'm a very visual person, obvious we all are in ic, but what I mean is... for example, i taught myself to draw cars specifically because I'm so disgusted at with modern car design. Maybe it's just because I grew up in the late 80s and early 90s, but to me, nothing is better than the boxy cars from back then. An AW11, W201, Lotus Esprit x180, the CRX. Just last year I bought a 25 year old E36 Sedan.
I have a genuine feeling of disgust with modern design. And people would just keep saying to me, "if you think you can do better, let's see your designs." I didn't want to just complain, I thought if I could convey my ideas to people that they would get it. Of course I was wrong and most people just have shit taste and will buy whatever the media tells them they should like, but I did build up just enough skill to put those ideas on paper.
When it comes to anime its the same thing. I hate modern anime all my favorites are from that era. Oedo 808, Goku Midnight Eye, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Genocyber, Megazone 23, Bubblegum Crisis, Urotsukidouji... I could list them forever.
So that's the style I was determined to learn, and then last year I wrote a story and it's a personal goal to turn it into a comic book. So each day I work on the story a bit, and I just work on character designs because I don't feel like I'm quite good enough yet to illustrate a comic book. I'm not ready, so I make these concepts just to build the mental library and muscle memory to draw like that. But I almost never draw 2 people talking or fighting or anything with backgrounds.
So lately I've been grinding figure drawing. Hoping I can start doing that.
Thanks for showing me this other artist btw.
