Help me, /ic/

I can't draw worth shit without doing the chicken scratch lines, but the chicken scratch looks bad, too. How did you get into doing those strong, confident lines without it looking awful?

These are supposed to be head outlines. About how many lines does it take for you to do a head shape? Maybe I just don't know when to start/stop a line.

Draw on paper using ink only (no undersketch), using a ballpoint is fine but if you want you can use a felt tip pen wich works even better
If you are so insecure about your lines digital drawing is not the wisest choice but whatever, just avoid to use the ctrl+z as much as you can

It seems better, though still AWFUL. It looks like symbol drawing still, but I think I'm getting more on the right track. Obviously still a long way to go before I'm worthy of posting in the beginner thread, but hey it's a start. Thanks!

The biggest thing that will help you learn to get away from that chicken scratch stuff is gesture drawing. Practice doing 1/2/3/5 minute drawings of whatever you want to draw with the main goal trying to capture the flow of the pose or "the main idea" and forget about trying to make it a one to one likeness. You'll learn how to make a lot more efficient mark making this way because you won't be able to capture the subject unless you learn to minimize and establish your line confidence. It won't be something you'll master overnight, so don't let it discourage you. This is what the masters Vilppu and Huston teach so rigorously.

I just tried sketching from a reference that I saw in the /BEG/ thread. I do way better with the chicken scratch still. Maybe I should try again with just solid lines and see where it goes.

Thanks, anon! I'll give that a shot.

I usually go for longer timings for those pose sketches, so maybe going shorter and more minimalist is the way to go.

Np! Absolutely the shorter times are essential for forcing you to cut out the unnecessary strokes and being more precise. If you really have trouble, try getting an 18x24" pad of newsprint and a charcoal pencil and do the gesture drawing so one pose fills up the entire page, that way you're forced to draw with your shoulder and a lot easier to cut out the hatching.

do you have larger paper? put it up vertically like on an easel. practice some large sweeping strokes, one edge to another. move on to ellipses.

A lot of shit advice in this thread.

Avoiding chickenscratch has a lot to do with confidence and speed. Practice gesture drawing with 20 second drawings. Practice "class mode" in lineof action.com, it willhjelp you make you draw fast and have confidence in your lines. Also, fill pages with circles and lines drawn with one stroke. Get that hand moving fast! More shoulder and elbow movement.

Get in the habit of using your whole arm to draw, not just your wrist. Using your wrist is fine if you're drawing small details but you'll have a limited range of motion elsewhere. Once you get more confident you'll be able to make larger, more sweeping motions rather than short "chicken scratch" lines on the whole drawing.

Ghost your lines: make the movement of the full curve 2, 3 times before actually putting your pen down and doing it.

It's like chicken scratch in the sense that it gives you confidence with extra strokes, but without the mess.

Care to give it a test?

There's little point to not chicken scratching during the sketch phase. Why would you force yourself to draw everything in one go when you don't even know what the drawing is supposed to look like yet?
Save the clean lines for when you ink/paint/draw over your sketch again/whatever.

Just Trace over someone's lineart that you like and try to stay as zoomed out as you can while producing lines that mimic the image you're tracing.

Easiest way of learning line control for beginners.

To draw more confident lines, you're gonna want to do some of the following:

drawabox teaches you how to get clean lines. but overall try to work slower, turning off music or any white noise helps immensely (especially for ADD/ADHD spergs like me).
