DISCUSSION:

Is it necessary to take a drawing to a 110 percent finish (as much as you can) once in a while to gauge your current skills and what you are doing wrong?

This board has a lot of back and forth over turd polishing so I wanted to open a discussion on the matter to let you anons voice your opinions and personal experiences.

The only person of note from this board who I personally know has commented on the matter is tehmeh (olly), his view being that you need to push on an artwork as hard as you can to see what you're capable of (source: his discord, no screencaps, sorry!)

Personally, I would agree, adding that you don't know what you're missing until you really give it your all.

So, what do you think anons?

No. Never finish anything. Always, and I mean always, go only half way, 3/4 way or whatever and avoid finishing everything you do. That way you’ll avoid failure and be in a constant state of ignorance about how to do what you want to do.
An added benefit: You never encounter problems to work thru.
The best benefit: You always get to tell yourself that it would be awesome if you would have finished.

to add on this, to make sure you always start when you wake up and dont struggle getting out of bed, all do 9/10 of the work in a day and leave the rest for the next day. Waking up to start on a new project is hard, but waking up to finish that last stretch of yesterday project is not that hard, because you already know what you have to do and just start, no planning required. By the time you will finish, you will be full awake and be able to start planning for the rest of the day.

I have drawn since 2014. I do not know the last time ive truly spent myself on a piece. 5 hours is the most I might spend as of recent and it is not enough.

I didn't really start this thread for myself though, just wanted discussion on the board. Finishing work doesn't matter when I don't draw often at all anymore. Ha ha.

I also struggle with spending a lot of time on my drawings, so I try to incorporate something new each illustration. Like adding simple backgrounds. It's quite embarassing how bad I am at drawing environments, especially since I'm okay at stylized characters.
Since I don't know the style you're working in I would ask myself: What is important to me? A mistake I see often is that people are quite aimless and get lost drawing details or spending way too much time rendering random areas, resulting in an incoherent, unfocused piece - a polished turd. The simpler something is, the easier it is to make it appealing.
IMO you should work within the boundries of your experience when creating art, but try to incorporate new elements each time. With studies it's a matter of what you want to achieve - they don't need to be finished, they just need to help you understand how something works. Practice stuff you are eager to apply.

Depends on your goal and how much you know. If you want to learn a specific skill like perspective, then doing the extras won't contribute much to this. If you already know the basics and unsure of what to work on next to improve, then its a good idea to push yourself and see what you're capable of creating. If your goal is to create a finished piece of art (like for commission) then obviously do that.

You guys don't have to be so all or nothing. Let people do what they want and focus on yourselves.

If you are in the process of creating a "masterpiece" and at some point you realize its structure is garbage. Wonky perspective and/or anatomy.
At that point there is no reason to continue until what is wonky is fixed. There is no reason to polish something you know is wrong, when you can work on making it right.

The term turd polishing is mostly used as a term to logistically solidify the hate people have for popular artists that's really just jealousy. Finished pieces is the name of the game. YOU HAVE TO make finished pieces at least once in a while.

It depends on the art style and where you are as an artist, but in general never polish a turd. Learning how to make good looking sketches and scribbles is far more important than whatever happens in the rendering stage.
If your rendering skills are amazing, but everything else is lacking, it WILL show and it will make the polishing take longer. Not to mention it can be really exhausting to stare at the same WIP for hours and hours.

Unless you want to end up like Shadman, my go-to tips for /beg/gers is to avoid making finished art. Its just a colossal waste of time for plethora of reasons.

But to add to that, don't take what I said as gospel and never make finished pieces. If you want to make finished art for your favorite social media, sure whatever. But if you want to be as efficient as possible, then you should avoid it.

Until you become a true master, you're always going to be polishing turds by completing your drawings. And this is a fine thing, there's a lot of stuff you learn from polishing your less-than stellar works and making them as good as they can be. They serve as a measure of your overall skill, when you're at 100% output.
If you completely avoid finishing pieces to avoid polishing turds, you're going to find yourself struggling to make your work look complete as you improve your fundies.
"Turd polishing" is just learning to make finished artwork when your fundies are bad, and if you neglect practicing it you're going to struggle to make completed looking work as your fundamentals improve. You can't live off doing sketches and studies forever.
