When you draw a pose there is usually a line of motion. A person standing proudly will have a big arc along their spine so their head and feet are in line but their pelvis is forward, with the spine and legs curving away. Fighting poses often have long lines of motion, or very closed in like a hunch.
Basically, focus on finding a line of motion. Also, ALWAYS show hands unless you have a good artistic reason to not. Hands in pockets works for a shy or casual pose but hands should be visible when in other poses. Also, head angle is really important. Tip it backwards if a character is proud and aloof. Tilt it downwards when they are sad or angry. Turn t it sideways to give a pose direction, and cock it to give it quizzical flare. Heads should almost never be in a flat state.
As for uniforms, STUDY ACTUAL SOLDIERS. Thigh armor almost never appears. Helmets are an absolute must. Most soldiers only wear vests as body armor,extra armor is too hot and heavy. Magazine pouches should be present and on the chest. Knives are usually kept on the belt or vest. Pistols go on the thigh, hip or chest. SOLDIERS USE SLINGS ON THEIR RIFLES.
