one of my pals has one. they have 7 patrons, despite having 1,000 twitter followers and a lot more tumblr and etsy followers (though i don't know the exact number). so, i would keep expectations low

you would be lucky to have more than 1 in every 100 followers as a patron. People rarely ever bother to give you money, and when they do it's usually a minimal amount. Following someone because you like their work is way easier than donating to them.

Try 1 in 1000 for a realistic goal. So if you have 5000 followers you might get about 5 people to donate. People don't really want to donate to you unless you produce a kind of work they really enjoy.

It also depends on what platform you're posting on, how much you shill your patreon, etc. If you post on twitter and instagram your followers might not necessarily be artists, just normies who like your art.

I'm 19 and getting good so I'm planning on creating one when I'm comfortable with my skill and have a decent social media game, my plan to keep it going for my college years to help me get through.

If in like 2-3 years I have $250~ on earnings I would call it a success

you should probably remove the link to your patreon, yeah. People might click on it and see that you don't have any patreons, which isn't anything big but it's just kind of embarrassing. It could also potentially lead to them thinking you suck, even though you might not. Wait until you have more followers, probably a few thousand at least.

I don't think I could ever willingly give someone money every month. I like their art enough to commission them, not be a fundraiser for their daily lives. Even artists who rarely post anything at all have one.

Totally depends on the type of work you do. For example, an amazing environment artist with 10,000 followers might only get 20 patrons, while another dude who draws decent anime girls and nudes with 5,000 followers can get 200.

Some types of work just appeal to an audience who are more likely to donate, like nudes, hentai, furry, etc.

activity is another huge factor I don't think many people know the importance of. there's someone with 42,000 followers on DA who only has 31 patrons, and i think the reason is because they only post once a month or once every two months. you have to be constantly active and post as often (w/ quality) as possible. that's one of sakimichan's success factors, in her most active months she can upload 20 finished paintings.
