reddit, as specifically art program pages on reddit, like I said, I can put the words and what I say A LOT nicer then I did there, what I did there was what I would say on 4chan, what I say there is largely backed up by reference and practice drills that show what they should do, much of it from an old pastebin I made when I was helping the question thread due to many people having the same issues and the sticky, especially back then, was not helpful, not sure if it changed, haven't looked at it, but yea there are a few things you need.
0) do not draw a style and ask criticism, it's impossible to tell what its style and what is a mistake, along with the combative nature that comes with my style
1) know perspective
2) be able to objectively lay in proportion
3) don't render, you are turd polishing, contour draw and shadow map till you cant see flaws, then render till you can see flaws in the drawing and go back to not rendering
4) have a defined light source
and that's what I consider the basics, a simple loop that will get you far, or at least well out of beg as far as base drawings and value will go if you stick with it, color is another motherfucker altogether, along with painting techniques and things that people don't notice unless they study high rez portrait artists.
as funny as it is, I am able to go in fairly hard on people there and get thanked along with not getting negative karma. the key is ignoring people so shit and delusional they can't take a hint and only helping people who want the help, it takes effort to type the words 'or any criticism/critique' and those people generally want to improve, so giving them a push tends to help.
when I was active on question, I did try to turn it more into an all around help thread due to how crappy many of the crit threads were at the time, those places kind of remind me of that.
