Pixiv Sketch, but I haven't posted for a few months. I've only been drawing in my sketchbooks, which is kind of a pain in the ass to post anywhere since I have to take a photo and then crop and edit the damn thing. I also haven't been doing much besides sketching, but I've at least been doing it frequently these last few months instead of maybe drawing something every other week, so I'm pretty happy so far. If I keep this level of consistency I can move up to putting in some real practice and study and making finished artwork.

Where do you know me from, anyways? I didn't expect anyone to recognize me, let alone be familiar enough to use the shortened version of my handle.

Sorry I ghosted you guys out of nowhere like that. I really liked you all a lot, I never had people that I could talk to about art before, but I'm kind of a neurotic, self isolating POS that can't manage friendships or any meaningful personal interaction very well. I ended up leaving instagram for the same reason, so yeah I'm kind of a retard.

I think you need some things that aren't exactly related to drawing, but will help in learning. Like having a predispoition to try your best, and not get discouraged from mistakes.

If you had a monkey try to open a box to get a banana by pressing a button, and all the wrong buttons deliver an electric shock, he'll give up pretty quick. Another monkey that tries but the wrong boxes give him a tiny banana instead of the big one he's going for will keep trying forever with a smile on his face.

Even if you suck at art, you can still enjoy your art if you have a healthy self esteem. If art is the last thread keeping you from falling in the abyss, then its hard to enjoy your /beg/ art when the grim reaper is standing over your shoulder chuckling at your boxes

yeah i mean obviously how your reward system is wired together plays a part in anything. but that's not really what i'm curious about. what i'm wondering if there's aspects of drawing you can actually never learn no matter how hard you try. like generating creative scenes and visualizing them in your brain, then drawing it in a perfectly realistic way with the perspective and everything being spot on. personally i think i have a predisposition (maybe?) for taking my time, noticing, recreating something i'm seeing, so i can draw pretty good portraits. however there was a japanese drawer (think kim jong gi just more manga style) i knew who could do what i previously described, and i seriously doubt if my brain could ever function in that way. just the amount of creativity and professional looking drawings she could produce while speed drawing. that kind of stuff doesn't even exist in my brain to begin with. so how could i ever do that?

Symbol drawing is imagining a flat 2D image like a sticker and then drawing that, non-symbol drawing is like having a 3D model of the subject in your head but only drawing the one angle you choose. When you see an image of a 3D model, you're seeing a flat image, but the 3D information of how it would look like from all angles and rotations still exists on the model, and it informs the final rendering. With symbol drawing what you see is what you get, there is no depth beyond what's in front of you.

Mind you symbol drawing is not all bad all the time, most advanced artists with non-realistic styles will incorporate symbols into their work in some way, but they'll do it in an informed way that makes sense and creates appeal, while being fully aware of what they're doing.

At night before going to be I have no problem animating scenes vividly in my mind, with angles, colors, effects, squash and stretch, anticipation etc. All of that disappears when I wake up and my mind is basically blank.

Symbol drawing actually refers to something more elementary, that is drawing uninformed mental images. Like when children draw a house with a sloped roof and a chimney, a door and a window. Or they draw a tree as a straight pillar with a fluffy crown of green. Comparative measurement is all about translating 3D forms into 2D shapes, but it is not symbol drawing. Actually it's what you want to do if you learn to draw with that method. Many times on this board I see bad attempts at constructive drawing getting called symbol drawing as well.

Of course there are hard limits to every skill in each individual, no amount of practice will make you as good as the best athlete, or the best musician, and drawing is no different, the vast majority of people wouldn't be able to draw like KJG even if they were explicitly trained from birth to do just that.

What you can do though, is work towards a personal goal, you may never be able to draw creative scenes from your mind alone on the fly, but you can learn to understand what makes that scene creative, what theory went into depicting it, what skills are needed to do that yourself, etc and then construct them yourself using references, refinement, more time than her and other non-genius methods. The only difference in the final result will be that her drawing process can be a party trick, and whatever differences in taste you have.

I don't know, to me it's more about the mindset of the artist rather than the final result, I spent a looot of time symbol drawing before construction actually clicked for me, and my final drawings before the click would appear constructed to most people, but I know for a fact I had no idea what I was doing when I made them. I consider them symbol drawing because they were made with the same mentality as trees with a straight pillar with a fluffy crown, just much more elaborate.

He's still drawing most of it, and if anything he's most likely doing the characters in most panels and promo material.
Assistants likely handle backgrounds, finishes, text, scanning/cleaning, edits, small panels, inking among the shared workload

Are you a professional? Have you drawn the human figure so many times in your life that god himself would consider you anatomical knowledge unnecessary? Those are the final lines, when he inks the drawing he just goes over whatever he already put down in pencil, he doesn't correct or erase anything, there is zero deliberation involved and he might as well just gone with the ink from the start.
