>>99945069There was a thread on /co/ the other day about obscure stuff. It ended up being about great old stuff in general. Fantastic Planet, Rock & Rule, Son of the White Mare, Mystery of the Third Planet, Walhalla, the Terrible Trivium dude, Gandahar and others were mentioned. Even that creepy ass aussie thing with Dot and the kangaroo.
I watched a few and remembered others.
My god. Friends, my god what happened? Cartoons used to be so stylish and imaginative. The visuals, the script, the delivery. They used to invoke such emotions. They moved, they saddened, they caused joy and had suspense. For little kids they were experiences. Like when Littlefoot's mom died. I unironically lament for cartoons with what has happened to them. Everything is half-assed cheapo eyegunk with epidermic humour, no emotional weight and pastel everything.
This is the death of an art and it's horrifying for me. How can the viewers accept this and how can the artists degrade themselves like that? Thin line style/CalArts is supposedly employed to cut costs and times down so they are viable.
Well cartoons have been viable for over fifty years without that style. Why were long running serial cartoons (with different styles too) viable in the 90s when technology sucked but not now?
Or why not at least turn to 3D with cartoon textures? It worked for Borderlands and Stormhawks among others. It offers more consistency and saves a lot of time and money by using the same assets frequently while being more versatile than flash animation.
Opinions aside, is thin line style cheaper than 3D?
