Oldfag here, started reading late 1980s and watched some of this. Here's a sort of timeline I found online, and they could be described as—
early 1950s: started out small and short
late 1950s: got tall and thin, more like a high schooler
1960s-70s: shorter again, often sort of monkeylike in posture
1980s-early 90s: bulkier and taller, more like a high schooler again.
mid-90s: resigned for cartoon (Beano switched to match, so suddenly it was a shock), huge head, bigger eyes, smaller nose, mouth position moves up so far it often looks like it's behind his eyes (now that's a nostalgic design, but in 1995 we older readers thought WHOA wtf?!)
Around 2010: redesigned again for newer cartoon, much more obvious TEETH
