Not sure I agree with you on either real life or fiction there. In both it seems that most relationships start out as friendships, where one of the two finally decides to ask the other out after a while.

Random hookups do happen, but they can obviously only be portrayed in more mature fiction - so not most cartoons. Same for online dating, really.
