So I was at Barnes and Noble the other day showing a good friend around the comic section and not so quietly lamenting the fact that Moonstruck finally found it's way to the shelves when an old guy started chatting with us and raving about being a Green Lantern fan for 20 minutes straight before my friend managed to lie our way away from the madman under the guise that we had an appointment to get to.

Is there actually good material/runs for Green Lantern or was that guy really off his rocker?

Note: Do NOT start Mosaic as your first GL book. It's very much the END of a whole lot of character arcs and if John Stewart never appeared again after that point there wouldn't be a problem, since it'd basically been all downhill from there.

GL is kind of confusing since the comic only ever gets half-hit by retcons. Hal was created in 1959 and got his first real story arc in 1970 with hard travelling heroes. But then Crisis on infinite earths happened and Hal got a new backstory and his cast got reintroduced. But in the actual monthly comics he acts like he still remembers pre-crisis and has all his powers and experience from it and basically aged in real time from 1959 onwards. But then in the 90's they gave him another new backstory but still made it clear all that other stuff happened so there was no point. Then a bunch of other stuff happened and Geoff Johns took over before the New 52 so what was meant to be another reboot didn't actually do anything.

If you want to get super technical Hal Jordan is somewhere in his 80's but acts like he's in his 30's because Geoff Johns doesn't give a fuck about consistency.

If you want a real answer start with Emerald Dawn then go to Hard Travelling Heroes, then pick up Tales of the Green Lantern Corps vol 1-3. Emerald Dawn was written after all the others but it's a decent origin story if you had to pick one out of that mess.

The bigger problem is that the actual monthly floppies from the bronze age(70's and 80's) are pretty consistently good and reasonably consistent with each other, but never actually got collected into trades. I believe there's a lot of torrents floating around that have everything in them but you'll have to check for yourself if you somehow get through about five trades and want to see more.

Hal has some ok black and whites for his older comics. He doesn't NEED his classic age to get new trades. What he NEEDS is more bronze age releases.

It's a lot like Wonder Woman, in that all the rec lists say she just had a really good bronze age and to bascially read all of it. That doesn't help a layperson who now has hundreds of floppies to dig through.
