I'm curious, what does /co/ do for a living?

I'm asking because i'm about to go to Uni, and I don't know if a fine arts major is worth it, or if it'll screw me over and I end up working fast food forever, seriously will I be ok?

Local tex-mex place with three locations. It's sub-McDonald's quality at four times the price and people think it's good just because it's local. I die a little inside every time someone comes in and treats it like it's on par with even chains like Olive Garden. Especially when we actually have a local 4 star restaurant that's only slightly more expensive and a couple Mexican places that are cheaper and exponentially better, mostly because they actually make their food instead of just throwing shit on a grill or in a deep fryer and remembering to pull it up before it burns.

I have a friend you got an Art degree but was sick of it by the time he was done so he took a few classes and now works IT. So there are other avenues if that doesn't work out.

We regularly have junkies come in just to shoot up and leave blood all over the sink. One employee who recently left for a better job would smoke crack in the bathroom. Two days ago we had a couple of meth heads, one of whom tried to rob us less than a year ago, loiter around for nearly two hours before a large group of black men came in to buy some fired chicken and scared them away. Even the good STEM degrees are subject to demand volatility and restricted markets. Due to the massive costs doctors don't economically outpace nurses for upwards of 20 years and specialized nurses can maintain wage parity throughout their career. Nurses also have better unions.

I know 8 people with fine arts degrees. The ones who are screwed didn't practice as much as they should and/or network well.

The rest all have jobs and are doing okay, except for one who is unemployed but super talented, she just isn't motivated.

A generic fine arts degree isn't going to be worthwhile. My friends that studied multidisciplinary art, for example, are still trying to make a living from art and not succeeding at it and when I was really in the arts community, I knew a number of people who, while they enjoyed their lives, had very non-successful lifestyles (e.g. still renters, no insurance prior to the Affordable Healthcare Access passing, no children or children who did without, etc. etc.). Even the ones with more plausible art degrees that centered on say Graphic Design or Photography aren't really doing that much better, save the one person who got a job designing record covers, which lead to a job designing book covers (90s/2000s) and who now works for a game design company even though he's 45 and has no clue about vidya than Ms. Pac Man and makes six bills.

Computer animation and a few other arts related fields will pay. A better question is WHY do you want to pursue a fine arts degree?

Don't do it. Most successful artists I know got their education in something else and learned art on the side, and that "something else" is what gives their art value. The digital graphics people started in comp sci. The person who does creepy skeleton drawings started in medicine. If all you learn from college is how to draw, then you're competing with people who learned how to draw on Youtube and also have other skills.

Work second shift (lead man in my half of the facility) at a RCRA TSD (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Transportation, Storage and Disposal) plant. So basically I treat hazardous waste, off load semi trailers, pump off tankers and run the places flow through system which the contaminated water we ourselves generate. I also am on a couple of plant committees which is less interesting. My shifts range from very boring (which I like) to very scary (which I like also, in a different way). Nothing gets the blood pumping more then hearing the EVAC alarm sound and, running out into the plant to complete your minimal shut down and plant isolation duties and notice the acid fog obscuring the other end of the plant and realizing 'Oh FUCK!!!! It's real this time!'

Don't do it kid. I'm literally flipping burgers for a living. The memes have transcended reality. Be an actuary. Be an engineer. Be anything that lets you have a normal 9-5 with the weekends and holidays off. You think you're compromising or giving in or whatever but you're not. You've got a goal and you're being smart about it. If your school's art program doesn't have a concentration or a BFA in illustration, then doubly don't do it, because that's what you really want. "Fine art" is for people who want to go all Jackson Pollock and splatter paint over a canvas. If you're on /co/ it's a safe bet you want to create more representational work, more shall we say "practical" art (if such a word can be applied to art) - pieces that can be used for comic books, posters, concept art, etc. Don't give up on your dreams kid, just have a solid plan to get there.

Reporter for a local TV news station. I usually work on our 6 and 10pm shows, mostly hard news. Pays pretty well now that I've been there a couple years. It's a decent sized market, small enough not get bogged down by the shadier journalistic practices you find in bigger cities.

Superman got me interested
in journalism. Fakes news is real, I've seen shit on national programs that'd get people fired in a market like mine. It makes me unbelievably angry.

Do whatever you want, just get into a place that'll have you working hands on or interning ASAP. The quicker you're out working on things you can put in a resume or meeting people you can network with, the better. A lot of times it's not necessarily what you know, but who you know.

I was a cashier at a grocery store, but I had to leave my job because I've been struck by some illness that causes me to faint at random, along with other conditions like muscle spasms and memory loss. So, I'm technically unemployed and staying with relatives, but I do some art jobs on the side. I miss being able to drive.

Management Consulting, But I got in with a degree in communications.

If you're unsure what you want to do communications is a good basis for undergrad, with it( depending on the course) you could be qualified for marketing, journalism, film/tv production, public relations, corporate communications or consulting like me.

the main thing is not to threat to much about this. when I was your age I actually didn't have any idea what I wanted to do at all, only knew that I liked writing and politics, and someone on /co/ was story timing transmetropolitan so I got it into my head that journalism would be a good way to go. Hated the industry but my degree was broad enough that I was able to pursue other things, so I guess i should thank anyone on here that story timed transmet around 10 years ago.

It's not just me either, my folks both went through late career changes in their late 30's and they both have rewarding careers and live very well.

Just pick a degree thats broad and remember to spend your time at uni volunteering and trying different things until you find something you'd be comfortable pursuing.

I've had friends that went the private art college route and they all told me their senior years revolved around them learning how to market themselves and network.

The only people out of everyone I knew who did Art School that were doing art professionally post-school all were doing design. Graphic, Industrial, UX, you get what I'm saying. Everybody who did something like painting, illustration, or anything else is doing whatever the fuck they can to survive.

I've been going to a handful of Doctors the last few months, thankfully my Mom is caring enough to drive me. So far I've had an MRI done, that's just shown more Cysts and Polyps growing throughout my Sinuses, but they're considered irrelevant to my situation (especially since they've been growing in since I was a kid), but I need a second opinion from an ENT. My X-Rays didn't show much of anything either. I had my Pupils checked out today, and they appear to be in the clear. So still unsure what's causing my Migraines, on top of everything. The tests of my heart haven't all come back in yet, but they said my blood pressure was abnormal between visits. I need a second opinion on any Neurological Issues, because that specialist dropped me because I "technically" wasn't having seizures so he said there was nothing he could do, and suggested I find a new doctor because they could be "micro-seizures" or something else in that field. And my Psychiatrist scheduled me a meeting with a Psychologists to see if the Memory Problems and other associated issues are because of some Mental Illness on top of everything else.

I'm just bad health wise. I've already got Asperger's, Hypotonia, Pronated Feet, an Astigmatism, Deformed Sinuses, Cysts in both of my wrists as well as throughout my Sinuses, Severe Allergies, Prone to Sinus Infections, Acid Reflux, Digestive Track Issues, Anxiety, Depression, and the list goes on. My tonsils actually grew back after they were removed, because my Surgeon botched it and left too much of them in my throat. At least that stuff was all manageable, to some extent - I can't really do anything, if I'm worried I'm just going to fall out at some point and not remember where I end up.

Hopefully they discover something soon, but I'm sure it'll be a few more months of this. In the meantime, I just have to figure out a way to keep living.

Somehow I've managed to worm myself into remarkable job security in a field where that isn't usually a thing, so can't complain. Then, I don't feel like I'm in any position to give advice on education since I'm a dropout who did a free 2 years course on game development (almost didn't graduate that because the school was convinced of fraud) and landed a job I've held for the last 6 years after a short bit of searching.

Me too. Only I don't have a job. Also, you don't need to be talented to work in film. There are others things to do that are less glamorous but more assured, such as the production side of film where I'm at. Learning to Edit isn't so hard, and neither is learning how to use cameras and important equipment. And unlike other jobs the potential for computers and technology to make those jobs obsolete is highly unlikely. I haven't broken into any steady paying field job yet but I'm working on a documentary right now that I'm hoping will get people to notice my merits enough to hire me. All you have to do is show competency and knowledge of your work. I'd recommend it.

Yeah it's a real problem, not even my parents have a clear idea of what I do.

honestly it depends on where you do it and what you align to, from what I hear in the states its a lot of redeye travel working on projects in other state.

The work can be anything from mapping out and improving business processes, to coming up with new marketing strategies, to implementing new IT solutions, to just filling in for a role a company can't staff currently. It all changes from project to project, so it's a good pathway if you want to try a lot of things to figure out what your niche is.

I'm 34 years old. Dont know where the time has gone. I just work construction part time and I'm a janitor at an office facility. It's nice to work alone at night. The job is beyond easy. Like literally there are nights I do nothing and just draw or I'm on /co/. I used to got to art school computer animation. Gotta say it was a complete waste of time and money. After that I continued to go to univ. With a degree in commercial graphics but just stopped short of about 70 credits. I just gave up on school, it felt very pointless to me. I don't know if I can go back with the same amount of credits left now... Life can be very lonely, women think janitors are like the weirdest people. I make OK money own a home. I wanna be a middle school teacher, I think I could work that out... but just recently I got a dui and a week of jail. I don't know if I can still cut it as a teacher with that on my record. On a side note I'm a very good artist. People have always been In awe of my talent since I was a child. Teachers always put me in gifted programs for art.
I honestly am very depressed these days though, my father passed away recently and my mother is almost full blown alzheimers. It hurts me to see her like this and its hard to take care of her alone. Only son. I don't know what to do with myself now.
But as for the fine arts degree man, screw it. Get something practical do something that will let you see atleast some of the world or get you into management. Don't be a janitor.

You should look into whether or not it's possible to get the DUI expunged off your record. It's not like you're going to become a teacher tomorrow. Additionally, if you pursue that, you should consider being an art teacher, and consider other situations - a private school or a charter school, for example, might have different standards where something like a DUI isn't an issue.

All that said, you should find you out if there's a local union rep for the school teachers in your area and contact them and invite them for coffee and explain your situation and get some practical info

Yeah, it's hard in my situation around here... the teachers union of my district is a gaggle of women with which I've had relations with about 4 of. One of them is now literally the mayors wife. Anywho, make a long story short they are not on good terms with me. I have a bad rep around my part of the neighborhood to say the least. You might not have as easy a job someplace else but given your situation with the public school, yes, you need to consider moving. Private schools might have higher standards but that's if it was a private school that was expensive and was a feeder school for say expensive private higher education schools (not necessarily Ivy League but say USC or Notre Dame types). That all said, if you are good at art and good with kids and good at teaching art, that would be far more important to a private school.

A charter school if you school system was say Los Angeles or Chicago, since they are already a second chance type situation, would also be OK, assuming again, you work at getting the DUI expunged.

As someone who was a high school janitor for 5 years I feel your pain, it can feel inescapable. The monotony every day starts to drag you down physically, I could feel myself thinking slower with each passing year that I let my mind idle at work instead of flexing it. I took a brash and sudden change, I moved across the country to a big city, I applied like mad and just started over. I'm not in a perfect place right now, but my life is moving. There's potential, and change, and I'm not scrubbing shit off walls anymore. It was a big risk to change so much, but I don't think there was any other way.

Unless you're studying something extremely specialized (which you're not, if you're considering a fine arts major), then your degree will basically just be an extra (not necessarily necessary) qualification.

I work in sales, but majored in English. Everyone I know works in sales or advertising, and they've all (except for the super techy tech guys) got degrees completely unrelated to their field.

The "I'm studying this so I can be that" thing is a meme and completely bullshit unless you're specializing in something (tech, medicine, etc).

Study what you want, just don't have illusions about what that degree will get you.

I think you’re looking at it rather bleakly. A bad job is a bad job but most jobs are just okay, if not better. Having a good job doesn’t mean you’re excited for work every morning. A good job is something that you can lose yourself in without regretting it.

When I’m working in my lab with my music on I can go hours with a completely blank mind but at the end of the day I can remember everything I did in vivid detail. It’s like an all day meditation that is gradually building me into a better resource for my company and my family.

Truthfully sometimes I feel like I'm wasting my time. I even get comments from my teachers that I should stick to character design and drawing comics. There is a market to support artists in my local area but I'm just constantly annoyed by my contemporaries.
