People don't like IKG for the story - anyone with a functioning brain can deduce 90% of the plot from a quick skim of the synopsis. The appeal is in the unique art style and the charismatic, compelling character of Barbara. We know what's coming, we know how it's going to end - but seeing it unfold through the eyes of such an endearing character and through some pretty great art turns what would otherwise be a mediocre, predictable story about a kid retreating into fantasy to deal with problems at home, into something worth sitting down and reading for ~200 pages
Fifteen year-old actress Madison Wolfe has all the range and personality of a wet paper towel and is way too old to believably play ten year-old Barbara, and the trailer makes it clear that the film version of the character is going for the "shy awkward nerdy gurl" angle instead of the brash, rude, back-talking, spunky little girl we see acting out and picking fights in the book - so there goes half the appeal right there. And you've already killed half of the appeal by making it a live-action movie - the visual aesthetics for the adaptation look uninspired and unpolished and at a running time of just under two hours, I'm sure we'll be seeing no shortage of shitty, CGI-ridden action sequences that stretch on for way too long and fail to make up for the poor pacing and shitty acting.
