Keep it short, because you're more likely to complete a short comic than a long one. And a person who has completed one webcomic is more likely to complete another one.
Maybe start with three panels. Then eight panels. Then three pages. And so on.
Don't be like the new guy at the gym who thinks he can deadlift the 200kg barbell immediately. Work your way up gradually or you will find yourself giving up.
Only publish the comic once it's done because there's not a chance in hell you'll earn a single fan without any completed works. Just like you will find it hard to get invested in a long comic without first having reached several smaller goals, so will the reader find it difficult to invest the time in reading a long, incomplete webcomic without any indication it will be actually worth it. And previous completed works are good insurance.
Also the delayed gratification will prepare you for the future.
After all, it is going to be a very long time before you're going to have any sort of fanbase, and never making it big is always an option. You have to build emotional resilience.
Now, as for tropes and whatnot, do remember that there is nothing new under the sun. Everything you will draw will be reminescent of something that already exists. In other words, don't worry too much about being cliché or unoriginal or having lots of tropes. Everything has some tropes.
What you really want is to use the tropes that work and avoid the ones that don't.
Is your antagonist an Evil Empire of Darkness? Go for it. But is your setting explained through an "As you know, your brother, the evil overlord..." exposition dump? Yeah, maybe see if you can tell your story another way.
In the end, focus on what you want to tell with your comic, and once that is done you can worry about the how.
