Now a funny thing about the writers is that just like the fans they have their own preferences when it comes to ships.
Ian shipped Stevidot (Ian mentioned that Peridot was his favorite character) and GregxPearl he wanted make it canon and we know it because we can see his preferences in his own show OK KO, (Steven/KO and Peridot/Dendy. Mr Gar/Mr Greg )
KO isn't exactly the same thing since that he is partially Ruby and we know because that Ruby is in fact "a man" and Ian's self-insert.
But even when KO and Dendy aren't exactly the same characters than Steven and Peridot they were made thinking in them and Ian wants make it obvious for us when Dendy says "Clouds" just like "Clods"
Truth be say Steven has three ships during the story (Connie/Lapis/Peridot) and the reason is that the writers have different preferences, but Ian prefers Peridot and that's why Steven says to her "I love you Peridot" in one episode.
