I would also recommend avoiding the Edmonson run and the Fraction run, but those are less of a problem than what's listed above.
The best stuff is the original miniseries, Return to Big Nothing, the Archie crossover, the Ennis run (especially Welcome Back Frank and the MAX stuff), the high points of the Baron run (the first 1/3 of it or so is fantastic, and some of the later issues are cool, too), the high points of the Dixon run (which is most of it), and some other odds and ends here or there.
