Somewhat similar, but I love it when a cocky rival character says shit like:
"I'll only need 5 minutes to beat your pathetic ass" and then finds the protagonist a lot stronger than they expected. They still win, but take like, 10 minutes or whatever, and even though the crowd/audience/public still cheers them on for winning, THEY know how close they actually came to losing.

that's stupid, the whole point of the line is that the villain wants to kill the hero personally, to stab them through the heart or something during 1v1 combat or whatever. Letting them fall makes no sense since they would have died via 3rd party either way. The only way what you're trying to say even makes an iota of sense is if the villain hauls the hero up, then immediately impales them with their weapon or whatever.

I never got that. Judging by human history, meeting intellectual and physical superiors doesn't cause a humans vs mutants response, it causes admiration at least. I know they were going for a racism metaphor, but racism in western society was initially caused because outsiders were viewed as INFERIOR. If you can lift a car or make matter move by thinking, you'd be seen as SUPERIOR if anything. There's no myths of Greek throwing tomatoes at Heracles.

Also, I never got why ppl wouldn't just assume Spiderman is a mutant. Also, the Asgardians, Eternals, Deviants, etc would just be mutants who bred together enough to form a functional race of mutants (or mutants from other worlds who eventually through breeding became the norm). I think most parents looking at Marvel Asgardians or Eternals would be like "wouldn't it be great if our great great great grandson was that strong?" Not "gas the muties! Oh, hi flying strong supermodel people who never get sick."

Their reasoning being, "Everyone has a choice. You can go on living and do good, or you can turn into a cunt. You're a cunt, and therefore deserve no sympathy/mercy."

Basically, a "Big Good" kind of character. It's a hard balance to make it work while keeping the character from feeling like an invincible and infallible Mary Sue, or to still give them depth, but when it works, I'm hard as diamonds.

For Iroh it helps that he's not the main protagonist character. If that was Aang's thing then it wouldn't work for the type of story they would were trying to tell. And Orel is in a show that doesn't need him to defeat the big bad or must do his job so it works as he just has to survive and try to stick to his morals.

I found that the dialogue in the dub version was more cohesive and was far more emotive than the Japanese original, which is what put the dub higher in my books. Also, I absolutely HATE typical shonen shows and their protagonists, they always come off as whiny brats, whereas English Deku's performance was much easier on the ears, though that can also be stocked up to other factors like his superior writing too. But whether your stance on dubs or not, I just felt this fight was far more exhilarating when in English.

He hardly joins too late. If he joins them earlier, like in the Ba Sing Se, how does his desire to catch the avatar and regain his honor play out? He needed to regain his honour to realise that it wasn't what he really wanted.

You can disagree with the writing if you want, but they made Zuko's decision to join the avatar consistent, and was the best content of the series.

I am, and based on the flawed writing it seems like he's a pretty poor one.

Fun fact: I actually had nothing much against the twist at the end of Book 2 - the shock value was probably worth it, I thought to myself. It was Book 3 getting ruined that changed my mind on that.

Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Genesis does this more or less. Really depends on your definition of "villain" though. Male lead is a bit of an anti-villain. And yes, it's plenty dumb. You don't even need to watch the shitty first season (Rage of Bahamut) to get it.

I won't spoil the ending, but I will say the the male lead never backs down from his primary objective. So, if you don't want him to give it all up for the female lead, you're good.

I dislike this if the protagonist and antagonist have super powers. What are a bunch of randoms gonna do against the big bad guy that the hero couldn't do? Oh, they just all climb on the bad guy and he gets distracted for no reason. I remember the third one happened on an episode of Burn Notice.

The main guy, his former mentor turned villain, and this smug genius villain was blackmailing them both to do a series of jobs for him. Once they finish the jobs the guy decides to smugly have a toast with them with some champagne. The former mentor finds out that the blackmail material is in a safe that has a biometric lock and he found out the location of it, so he stabs the guy in the heart since it only needs his DNA and not for him to be alive. The last thing he says to him is "That's the problem with people like you, you're so busy planning a hundred moves ahead, you don't see the one that's happening right in front of you."

Ok, I dug around in an external drive, and found the exact issue. Hitman vol 7, "Super Guy" part two (story begins at page 79).

Meanwhile, in reality, things like anti-intellectualism and other forms of pressure from the common man to keep people in line are very much found throughout history.
