You also have IZ's continued cult popularity which carried the series well into the mid and late 2000's. Combine that with a lack of parental supervision, the rise of Hot Topic and mainstream "goth" culture...it's no surprise the way things turned out they did.
I'd like to think that most are old enough to know better, now, but really I have no idea.
