I don't consider myself a great artist, but my eye is trained well enough to tell that these SU/OKKO-type storyboard artists are not putting in the effort they could be. Especially with the simple-ass art styles they're working with, it's very easy to maintain a certain quality. Do these guys honestly believe they're anime/2D Disney animators or something? They are not working with realistic to semi realistic proportions here, just noodle-limbed, blocky characters.

Heck, these guys aren't even doing much animating in the first place given all that goes to the Koreans. What would THEY know about animation?

Because its core fanbase is the LGBTQ+. They've never been not-defensive. It's like the opposite of Star Wars and Star Trek fans who tear everything town. They practically hold everything that "represents" them up.

The problem are these "critics" making a fool of themselves by trying to appear sophisticated and professional. At the core of the motivation behind the criticism is that the art is ugly and the inconsistent models being jarring for the viewing experience. That much is true for them. They need to stop saying stupid shit like questioning the professionalism of actual animators in the industry and just be honest about their position as the audience.

Normally I would think of it as an overreaction, but at some point you've got to draw the line on how much is too much, and Steven Universe has crossed that line on a few different occasions. There's nothing wrong with going a bit off-model from time to time, but there's also nothing wrong with getting a reminder that you should be showing at least SOME restraint.

Frankly, I see it as two different meanings of the term.

The kind that actually shows off an artist/animator's style, or exaggerates movements or expressions for the sake of humor or action.

And the one that most of us are railing against- unintentionally misshapen characters, layering errors, stuff being wrongly colored in (nor not even colored in), characters depicted at the wrong height, that sort of thing.

And while it's already bad enough that it happens to shows with detailed art styles (think any 80s/90s shows, for instance), shows with simpler styles like The Simpsons, Steven Universe and OK! KO seem to have even lower standards than usual. Proving that no one on those shows' respective staffs give a shit.

Didn't Sugar say she was encouraging her borders to push they're own styles. In that case it's not laziness, but argueably a bad decision.

Playing loose with animation styles works well for surrealistic, episodic shows like Flapjack and Space Dandy.
However Steven Universe is narrative driven with strong continuity. Having the characters appearance change constantly messes with that.

Because when you DO go off model it has an impact. It is a tool you reach in very specific situations. To say all off model is bad is to not to tell the whole tale:
Going off model will confuse the audience about the characters heights, designs. In practice, you are murdering and destroying the design.

For what end, in particular?
Let's exaime Steven Universe real quick.
Peridot and Steven size changing as well their base model - It's shit. I can't tell you what Steve is supposed to look like anymore I got like 4-5 version per episode for fuck's sake.

To hijack discourse to lord over "uh hu people bitching about off model know nothing about muh animation" only proves to me what I already knew from their art: They are incompetent and think highly about themselves.

A tool is only as good as the context to use it.

The reason these artists are so defensive about subjectivity and the celebration of ill constructed art, is because they're insecure. This is the first line of defense in bauhaus, the part that gets artists to independently buy into it.

Essentially, a true artist works beyond themselves to create a work with a specific vision that they oblige to bring to life as best as they can. This is why, when done correctly, art that's supposed to look flawed will still look presentable and good, because its purposeful and part of the mise en scene. Controlled chaos. However, many artists are ego driven and feel sensitive about their work, and so use the suggestion of art being subjective as a crutch.

If the work presents itself as cool, aloof, and apathetic, in their minds, it elevates them above criticism. However, what they don't understand is if they don't care, the audience doesn't care either. You know the saying "its the little things that matter?" well that's true, people notice the little things both when they're right, and when they're done wrong. When they're done right, it brings the audience closer to a transcendent and universal vision that the artist has successfully communicated.

When they notice the things that are wrong, this is an erosion of immersion. It destroys the illusion, and these artists use this as a way to not actually compete with real, genuine art. "Its ironically bad, so it cant ACTUALLY be bad, right?"

This is the work of weak, visionless artists with overfed egos. They have nothing to truly say, and so their work reflects this wether they're aware of this or not.

When these artists bring up things like budgets and time constraints, that doesn't invalidate someone's opinion on whether or not it looks good. Smears and off model are fine, but choices have the be deliberate. The problem with SU (and it is literally ONLY Steven Universe in discussion here) is that there’s this inconsistency with the characters themselves. In character design, form == function, so when design isn’t consistent, guess what? Character isn’t consistent. And when the MAIN DRAW to your show is STRONG CHARACTER WRITING, it’s a bigass problem when your characters constantly change shape.

Steven is either a harmless 8 year old way in over his head or a sheltered 15 year old hippie from episode to episode. Is Connie a dorky bookworm or a bubbly teenage girl? Is Peridot an adorable gremlin or a haughty shit? Is Lapis a loney autist or a depressed cunt?

Who knows, because these characters are written, drawn, and animated differently from episode to episode with not even the slightest hint of continuity or development. You have showrunners and series bibles for the express purpose of solidifying that continuity and consistency, so that when you want to morph the character models or develop a design or play off a new idea, the viewers will notice rather than chalking it up to yet another error.

It isn’t the end of the world, but it is a problem with SU as a show. For what it’s worth OK KO understands how/when to deform character models way better, and the nonserious comedic/action driven plots make it easier to roll with whatever weirdness happens.

Why does it look like Steven's high goes unchanged but connie's height is different? Thats not a "style" thing thats inconsistency and lazy.

And with flapjack i dont recall there being any inconsistenciesin things like height, going from a toony visual to a gross realistic style is not the same as what SU does.

I believe off model can work if it’s used to exxagerate emotions, emotional states, or body expressions (size can change too as long as it’s otherwise consistent).

However, the problem with shows like SU and OK KO is that it goes beyond that and allows artists to lazily adapt the models to their own “style” whenever they see fit, leaving dramatic or slice of life scenes often looking far too exaggerated and silly looking for their own good. Meanwhile, shows like modern Family Guy mistaken on-model for stiff and force their animators to reduce all motion to the barest of bones, leaving the shows to look bland if not ugly.

Good examples of off-model in my eyes include John K’s episodes of the original R&S, SpongeBob Season 10+, >>97629947, the new Mickey Mouse shorts, and pic related.

Johnny Test, after season 1, was made using flash puppetry. The lazy thing to do in that case was only to use the stock expressions and models of which they did.
Meanwhile, SU is made frame by frame for non-background elements. In that case, the artists were too lazy to ever correctly follow the model sheets.

The most criticism i got was...well..honestly i cant remember. Everyone wants to pat you on the back so you can pat them on theirs when their turn is up.
Teachers didnt really teach fundamentals, unless it was something like ceramics or wood carving. Take a drawing class and you wont do much figure drawing but you may end up doing an exercise that involves drawing to music. Sounds fun, but if your trying to be serious about art you feel like your wasting your time.

Also in art schools lectures are mostly teachers talking about how you need to use your art to make a statement. And they mean a social, environmental, or political issue. Thats art school for ya. No real focus on techniques or how to actually improve your art, no, its more about selling your art really.

Do you know how many times i would half ass a project or do it minutes before class, slapped on some story about what the drawing "represents" and got an A for it?

I actually had a debate with someone on discord who unironically thinks that you shouldn't be allowed to criticize someone's work unless you get their super special permission first, and that some people (children) are completely exempt from criticism altogether.

I took art classes for Fine Arts is was basically the same shit, it was impossible to get a real critique until I got lucky with a teacher who originally studied in Europe and was stricter with her classes and gave real criticisms. Art schools in California really suck

Either that or be your own critic. Posting my work on DA and the like has taught me that I going to have to be my own critic and check for flaws in my work myself. I'm starting to recognize the shit I get wrong, the and areas I could improve on. Though it would be better to get a second opinion instead of having to claw and dig for one.

Have people ever offered "constructive criticism"? Has anyone ever said something like "That looks great. I wonder what it would look like if X was done or if it was done as Y."? Has anyone ever suggested anything and worded it as a suggestion of an alternative rather than a suggestion of an improvement? I would think that at some point someone is going to judge a little and try to coax their peer into improving their style and work, but for all I know that could be "offensive" or some shit.

They send their off model, shitty boards to the other departments, that create the inbetweens as close to the storyboarder's specifications as possible.

Then, the poor Korean sweat shop animators have to somehow make a cohesive show with horrible fucking storyboards and inbetweens.

Bad off-model art is bad. If characters change heights between shots, it's bad art. Especially if it happens constantly and consistently.

If you're an industry professional that gets paid for your work, you have no business being lazier than the unpaid fanboys that made Double Rainboom. You also have no business impotently lashing out at critics on Twitter with the "You know nothing about animation, waaaaahhhh, bawwwww, murrrrrrrr!" bullshit.

Also, "But we choose not to have a quality control team, it lets everyone show off their unique styles!" is particularly bullshit when you're using toonboom, all your artists are talentless CalArts hacks, and your lazy background art's paint goes over the lines.

Look, those guys on anime forums that take transitional frames and yell "Look at this bad animation!", they're losers.

But the people that criticize Steven Universe for being badly animated, badly drawn, badly written, and badly everything? They're legit. They're right. Steven Universe is a bad show. At least OKKO and Uncle Grandpa have the decency to be honest about being low-effort cashgrab shitposts with no redeeming qualities. People that consider SU good have shit taste. Objectively shit taste, just like those that that consider testicle pain pleasurable and those that consider shit something that's good to eat. Your personal subjective tastes won't change objective reality, and they will never be a better metric for quality than objective reality no matter how much you hate that fact.

Call me "Authoritarian" if you want, claim I'm "Just telling people to stop liking what I don't", it won't matter, because you'll be wrong. Enjoyment is subjective, quality is not. Steven Universe is low-quality, and cucks defend it because they don't want to admit they were suckered in by this show for even longer than I was. I dropped this show after we met the Barn's original owner.

these issues probably are watercooler talk for them. a lot of these new artists browsed and participated on sites like Tumblr, /co/, Deviantart, etc. so someone in the industry sees these criticisms eventually. It just takes a while for someone to air these grievances about the criticism they heard about them on social media. some of these tweets, posts, etc. have been retweeted/reblogged by dozens of people who work in the industry since they were aware of the criticism but someone finally had the balls to get mad publicly about it.

I can't believe anyone would be that willfully ignorant. The art industry as a whole, animation industry included, is 100% who you know. It's nearly impossible to break into it without meeting someone who helps you in or knowing someone who gives you a foothold. It is 100% cliques and nepotism and it's a real ass problem.

Not to mention the whole fucking argument all these fucks seem to be pushing. The whole: "You can really only be a critic of animation if you've gone to school for it." Or "If you haven't got a degree you don't really stand in a good position to criticize my work, yadda yadda." That fucking argument is the most elitist classist B U L L S H I T argument there could ever be in a discussion about this shit. It gets my blood fucking boiling.

I have literally seen people in this discussion, working for CN, say "If you have less than a year of art school under your belt you're not qualified to criticize me," FUCKING BITCH. Do any of you realize how expensive art school is?

To go to a good art school, and I mean a good one. One that actually matters. You're looking at AT LEAST 50k for a semester of school. And not many of them are optimized for scholarships or federal assistance. We're talking 100k to do a full year and (apparently) at least 200k dollary doos spent on an art degree (an industry that doesn't favor degrees!) to be allowed to call them out on their shit. 200 THOUSAND FUCKING DOLLARS to argue with them.

This industry is poison.

This only barely even scratches the surface of the over arching argument, too. The real problem is with these fuckers equating any kind of criticism that they get while someone isn't sucking their cocks with bullying. And arguing that the people who ingest their SHIT are in someway not allowed to have standards. That if they say, "Hey this character is off model, why?" they are somehow FOR SOME REASON "entitled". I'm an artist and I fucking hate this industry. I wish someone would burn it down to the ground so we can have standards again. I'm sick of this shit soup we brewed together and are now being forced to live in.

Except in one regard. You want to know a big fucking secret about artists? Have you ever seen that shit where artists on tumblr flood their blogs with political shit? That's not actually what it looks like, that's a trick. A lot of them don't even agree with the shit they post. Half the artists I know basically kill their own art blogs doing that kind of shit because without doing it you might lose your audience on those sorts of platforms. Art is the medium of human truth. But if the platform is heavily politically bias, then HOLY SHIT WOW IT LOOKS LIKE A POLITICAL AFFILIATE IS LITERALLY TRUTH GIVEN SHAPE. NO WAY. The only way to get even possibly noticed without school and friends is to POSSIBLY by the grace of FUCKING GOD get your stuff to be popular enough online to maybe swing you a gig. Even then it's people you meet and know online doing it for you. It's the same shit, just with ungodly luck instead of money. It's laughable. It's like playing the lottery. And politics spice the pot.

And the political shit ensures that you keep at least some small core of a fandom around to share your work and your posts in hopes of building that fan base at least some small amount. Because if there's any hint of something those groups don't like you are slapped the fuck out of relevancy so fast it'll make your head spin.

This is an entirely different argument for another day, though. The point is that this clique shit is infinite. This "get good" sort of answer is a pipe dream. The industry is far crueler and bigger than you might think, yadda yadda.

My main issue is that it's fucking expensive as shit for no reason, and you really aren't required to know or understand anything because "art is subjective" is such a fucking easy mantra used by artists who have no idea how to create good work. You can give a student all the information in the world, help them along all the way, literally hold their hands on form and anatomy and animation and everything you can ever imagine. But it's their choice to follow it or not. Because regardless of whether they learn and understand what you're teaching them, they'll probably be getting a pass either way. Art is subjective. That's the argument.

The best part is when Little Billy goes into art school, and doesn't learn a god damn thing. Gets sucked in and pumped out as William Bonerart. All throughout school he keeps saying "Art is subjective, art is subjective," he does the classes but never seems to get any better. Picks up shit from the people around him instead. Learns to cut corners, thinks he's doing better but he's just shifting sideways never up. "Art is subjective". "Art is subjective". Willie upon graduating suddenly realizes he knows nothing and his art never improved, and then suddenly that mantra doesn't mean shit while he's raging against the school and it's professors for "Never teaching him the skills he needed". Dobson did this. This was a well known thing Dobson did. I have friends who did this, too. I hate them for it.

CalArts has definitely gone down hill and become more lax. It's really just sort of an overgrown children care center for rich babies at this point. That's why their students look like absolute trash coming out of it. But I don't blame the teachers and what they teach for this. It's just as much an issue with the way the students perceive the art world, as well.

I have heard many times though of art classes and schools where you aren't allowed to draw anime because the teachers get triggered by it. I have even read of two separate instances where a teacher got fired for bullying students who drew anime.

Except when it isn't.

I'm always scared shitless when I see a friend critique another artist. I've had to literally stop friends of mine from offering critique to other more well known artists because I knew they weren't going to hold back and I know how people react to that shit in the worst possible way. It's a massive ego problem, held up by (usually) years of positive nothing speak, and the thinnest skin you could ever imagine.

A lot of the current people being sifted into the system who have all these huge modern issues were originally Newgrounds animators. Don't even for an instance make the mistake of thinking that isn't the case. Also, a lot of them were pretty wealthy from the start or come from fairly wealthy families and have never been able to take criticism. This has ALWAYS been the case and no one ever really noticed or decided to bring attention to it. Or wanted to. Because it's so easy to idolize an artist and think they can do no wrong, it's hard to admit their faults and accept them as a real person who needs to grow the fuck up. Especially if you've been watching their shit since you were young.

Anyone from old newgrounds who has ever touched Game Grumps (it feels like I'm picking on them, but they're just a really easy group to point out for this) or the people there in is just as much a problem here as the people working on SU. They just aren't as obvious about it.

The Newgrounds wave was the result of technological determinism; an actual organized space for animation. Although many of the shorts were Mario parodies and video game shit that wasn't actually that funny, it felt revolutionary because it was the first time one could see animation that wasn't in some "official" context. As a writer, I've realized 'critique' is hard to come by in artistic fields because no one knows what exactly they should talk about due to the subjective nature of creative works. I assume that design and art are far more subjective than writing which makes it that much harder to come up with valid objective things to criticize. Much like writing I bet there are obvious things like lighting, scale, and actual ability to convey the visual idea, compared to tone, flow, and dialogue, sentence structure, and paragraph length. Once you've gotten those down, in writing, you have to start critiquing more advanced things, like the theme, or, the 'feel' of a story which is so incredibly subjective it's a skill set all in its own right.

Which is why I depend on a few other writers that understand my style and my themes and give me the strong valid criticism of my work I need and I do the same for them. This is something I feel all artists have to look for as depending on strangers to give you any critiques, even strangers proficient in the field, is fruitless as the more advanced you are the less likely they are able to give you anything that you can use to improve.

I had 2 watercolor teachers who were very technically helpful. Theyd show techniques and tips on how to mix the paints.

But there wasnt much " hey instead of this try this" they either liked it, or said they did, and negative criticism was either non existent or kinda snarky.

For example. I drew a tamandua for a class once. The teacher offered no critique but at the end of class made a speech about how so many of us didnt put any thought into our pieces, and how we werent trying to send a message to the world, most of us were simply drawing animals.

Instead of talking to anyone individually or critiquing us while we presented, he did a half assed group critique pretty much saying " i dont see any propaganda here. Stop drawing things you like and start getting political!"

It's not as bad as something out of Ren and Stimpy. Most of these cases in SU that are addressed that are relatively minor and have little impact on the episodes. People are just making mountains out of molehills. Anyone claiming this is "the downfall of animation" are simply overreacting.

One extreme is when animation is too consistent, like in those cheapo limited animation cartoons from the 70s and 80s like Fat Albert and He-Man. The problem with those cartoons is that they stuck to the model sheets all the time and never broke from the references to create more original and varied expressions on their own. Because of this, those cartoons were boring to watch because they never had room to breath or express themselves. They were robbed of their enegry.
Then, you have cartoons like SU, which is on the other side of the extreme where the animation never stays consistent from scene to scene. The problem with SU at the moment is that they are using the pretense of "off-model for the sake of exaggeration" as an excuse for their slipshod animation quality.

If all shows are allowed to go this off model than it really is the downfall of animation.

Flapjack was a good example of being on model while allowing boarders to show off their style. Flapjack is never taller than k'nuckles, his head seems to always end just under knuckles nose. Their heights are always the same even if one boarder has the nose inbetween the eyes when others dont.

SU has had connie be one head taller in one scene to only a few inches in the next.
Inexcusable.

You like SU im guessing. Stupid, but thats your choice. But dont try to drag others into your delusional world where the show does nothing wrong and has an engaging and well thoughout story.

Real talk, off model is good, flexibility should be encouraged. Assembly line model sheet mentality sucks and you might as well use CGI or flash if you arn't going to play with style or warp the characters a bit.

All that said, what the Steven Universe crew has done is completely unacceptable. Rather than bringing in different styles and talent from artists who can draw, they have refused to moderate their poorly trained low skilled artists. A decision to draw a character in a unique way is different from an inability to draw that character. It's obvious this comes from a lack of skill, not creative intent.

Its all about standards. You say most of the fans dont care, well the fans who still like the show are just devoted blindly. They dont care if connie is 3 feet taller than steven in one scene because they'll work around it in their minds.

They have no standard for quality. Neither do you.
Plenty of things have flaws but are still enjoyable. This shows problems dont just lie in heights fluctuating, theres so much more. Its just this is one of the more visual issues and its complete insanity to say, you should just ignore it, dont take it so serious.

People work hard to get in the industry and sometimes cant catch a break, then you have these goons working on a show, cant stay on model and come up with bullshit excuses as to why it is so shitty.

Flapjack did off model perfectly, that show let the artists be themselves while still having a core model. SU has nothing but excuses.

That's a biased statement. It is considered special because it has a story that's considered to be enticing, characters considered lovable, and its showing of same-sex relationships, which was pretty unique for it at the time it came out. It may not appeal to you as much but that doesn't make it wrong for it to for other people and it just so happens to for more people than it doesn't. To reiterate, the flaws its claimed to have do little to get in the way of what most people enjoy from it. Call it what you will, but that's just the way it is.

You went to art school, and in art school, you probably didn't learn a whole lot of art. You may have learned a lot about self-expression, but the mentality at the schools was likely the same as the mentality in the industry. You were taught that art is subjective and that there's no reason to try to do well because objective standards don't exist.
The only incentive you could possibly have for listening to me is if you take pride in your work and genuinely care about doing a good job, but we both know that if that was the case, you'd already be putting in effort and your first response to criticism wouldn't be self-defense.
And I know actually trying is hard. It's hard to do your best and push yourself to your limits and it's even harder to be told that even at your limit, you're shit. It's scary because you can't even lie to yourself at that point.
That's why I don't blame you for not putting in any effort and drawing at a level that would be embarrassing for a teenager. I would do the same thing in your shoes and anyone in this thread who says they wouldn't is lying.

What does the show's aesthetics even have to gain from doing it? It's not even like it happens during a transformation scene or anything where weird misshapen versions of the characters would make sense. Literally one shot you're looking at Steven standing crotch high to one of the gems, and the next they're virtually the same height. I've seen lower budget shows pull off more consistent animation than this. Sugar telling the artists to just do whatever they want doesn't show a desire to give them more freedom but rather a lack/fear of commitment to keeping order for her own fucking show.

Ironically, there are plenty of folks who are on big shows in the industry that have no art degree or no fancy CalArts contacts that got hired basically off Tumblr.

I see it as a tool or a tecnnique, just like any other.It's how you use it that matters.

If it's an artistic choice made for a reason, like enhancing comedy or feeling by say making the character's head bigger or smaller, I have no problem.

I don't even have a big problem if a character is different from episode to episode as long as it feels like it's enhancing the story or letting us see something different in a character.

If it's happening because of laziness or a lack of supervision of what boarders are turning out, then yes, that show should be called out and shamed.
