Watchmen was a BOMB. It didn't not make it costs back. However, it works as a very expensive advertisement for the Watchmen trades, and companion spin-offs, which is a huge profit maker for DC's catalogue.
One of the reasons Disney is paying a premium for Fox is because of it's library. Things like 20 plus years of the Simpsons, classic 50s and 60s movies, the release rights to SW#1, Avatar, etc., it had a great collection of material that works well with Disney's ability to market the hell out of that kind of stuff AND use it for streaming and content padding.
