it actually cost more most of the time to have paper copies and to do everything over the phone. when you get stuck in a situation such as the phone not working properly or a billing issue, lines going down or emergencies, a lot of places don't have local offices to help you anymore. online is the best bet. but if you don't have access to your online banking and email, then chances are they can't help you. and if it's an immediate emergency you'd have to wait days for paperwork to get transferred back and forth. not to mention if there's insufficient funds for some mistake then the whole system fucks up. so you can temporarily lose health insurance, car insurance, mortgage payment, electric bill, cell phone bill, telephone bill, and it would have to take a large amount of money up front to correct issues until there's a resolution down the line and you get credited back the mistake.

but poor people don't have the luxury of that, so a tiny mistake snowballs into a whole ordeal.

living off the grid takes a lot of effort, if you have a family or if you have a regular job in a city it's actually detrimental to try to and live off the grid. not having the internet in an age where it's all connected to your smart phone, and most every important aspect of your life communicates through email and verified cell phones at some point, yeah internet is essential. this isn't just well you don't get to watch your netflix hurrrrr. that's all maybe the cable company cares about but the real impact of losing internet is fucked if you don't have the money to back up your lifestyle.

even if you prepare and have everything on autopay with the bank you'd have to either have an incredibly large sum of money that you would not concern yourself with money just withdrawing with no verification (so a rich person) or you are constantly going back and forth to the bank to check your account.

this type of situation actually puts additional financial stress on poor people. it cost money to go back and forth, time, effort, and gas.

depending on the area you live at or your contract it might not be possible to just fire them. it's either no company in the area besides them or too costly to break the terms so you have to wait it out with them.

wit that said there's no promise of them just doing it again later and you having to do it all over again. not everyone has all day all the time available to do these things because of work and family or basic life responsibility.

in that scenario, we'd actually go back to the library being full of poor people and students who need to use the internet there because of monetary shifts caused by this. the way it was before smart phones gave internet access to every single person at a low cost. in 2000's not every single home had computers some didn't even have internet. so libraries where full.

it would essentially go back to that time period. so people did plan ahead and did take the time to do as you say. but it sure makes life difficult if the library is closed or too packed to get you a seat. and again while most people with money probably won't have a single care about any of this, poor people are greatly affected by things like this. having internet access and a smart phone has leveled the playing field quite a bit. giving the poor access to technology on the cheap. no need for a car phone or a navigation system if you have a smart phone. no need to go to the library if you can access information for free on your own. you don't have to pay to take the bus or for gas for ever single little thing. if you can solve issues from a phone just like well off people.

Let me spell what I am saying out to you. The people who don't have internet for their homes can still use the internet in many many other locations. Having internet for you home is not life or death. There are plenty of free alternatives now more than ever. If your hypothetical situation happened you won't have packed libraries, you'd have students in starbucks, airports, mcdonalds, ect all spread out because the library isn't the only place to get free internet these days.

that's not an argument that's just willfully ignoring actual points in slightly different sentences.
if you consider electricity and water a necessity
in order to have these current and constant and solve any issues with these, including the house itself being paid on time you need the internet. so if you consider one a necessity the other two as they are tied together in economy. in order to pay for one you need internet.
now there are ways around that but if you look at the life structure of an average city citizen(not some exception to the rule), it is detrimental to them not to have this access.

and it again it doesn't stop with just water and shelter, it also affects health care and work aspects. which are considered a necessity by most people.

so yes if it's tied in financially to the things most important to the average citizen to the point that it's something they use daily not for entertainment or leisure but for life matters then yes the internet is that necessary.
