acouple of episodes he tried to tell him but he basically had already lost the right to be his father at that point as joseph, undestandably so view dale as his father, towards the end of the series he is more determined to be a part of josephs life

Because by the time he wanted to be a larger part of Joseph's life, he and Nancy were no longer a couple and he felt Dale was a friend he couldn't betray. So doing so would tear apart the lives of his son and friend, and possibly lose all of them in the process. Despite being kind of a scum bag, John isn't an idiot or a monster and realizes that it'd require more tact

Dale knew the entire time. He was getting his revenge on Redcorn by playing the fool and also being the better father to Joseph. So the psychological trauma would build up and consume Redcorn.
