And I feel this mentality of "Only beautiful over-produced things are good" is what gave us the uninspired decade of comics we're living in.
Film and comics, as a medium, can give themselves the luxury of not being aesthetically pleasing. Not every comic/film is made for a broad audience.
Let's take B movies, like "Dr Caligari" (1981). The direction may be horrible, the actors bad, the costume design cheap and the production as poor as it can be, but if the vision is strong enough it would translate trough all of that. Giving you a diamond in the rough. With "art" there should be no qualifiers.
I never liked something like Hanks "ironically" or "in spite of how bad it is". It's supposed to be dreamlike and oneiric. It truly saddens me how people don't appreciate his work and see him only as "that wacky dude from the 40's".
