legitimate answer is many factors:
First, being a premium-package channel; despite being awesome, vast majority of folks were not going to pay extra for it.
Second, pseudo-mis-management between Discovery and Hasbro; Discovery Media folks gave no guidance nor care on their part believing the brands thus channel would sell themselves. Thus, Hasbro was left heading a tv channel nearly alone, having no idea how to produce or properly manage production of shows and learning-as-they-went. Which, in turn, lead to a lot of production folks not receiving the industry standard of support.
Third, MONEY, specifically advertising. Ends up anyone who would have any inclination to advertise on a channel directed at children and families as a whole are also Hasbro's rivals. Of course, Mattel nor Lego would buy ads on a channel owned by a competitor. This is why we got the infamous "Gak commercial three times in a row" situation.

That doesn't exactly add up though, since when it was Hub it aired a lot of shows, and now that it ended and became Discovery Family, MLP is like 80 percent of what they air during the daytime and that's the only show still getting new episodes

Nostalgia has a limited shelf-life. You can't build a brand on nostalgia. Remember The 90s Are All That? It was trending on twitter for a while and we had threads on /co/. That block still exists, but nobody talks about it or discusses it, because nobody wants to watch the same old episodes over and over.
