Once a comic discussion turns into some real life political issue and isn't in the context of the comic or cartoon setting anymore, splitting off the discussion towards /pol/ would be fine.
But as we all know, mods do it for free, which means that as volunteers, they do it whenever they have time for that, and time is valuable, and time being money and valuable, they don't actually have the time to deal with the petabytes of garbage discussion data that is being generated each day on 4chan.
Well-programmed algorithms are needed to automatically shift the posts around to another place more suited whenever the discussion turns offtopic, without immediately killing the thread off.
Then again, discussion on 4chan is meant to be ephemeral, so if it the entire thread is pruned, no big deal.
